I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2020 and took 5 months leave from work for treatment during the peak of the COVID pandemic. I wrote this poem in June, 2021 that summarized my cancer experience and how my Christian faith got me through it.
The skyline in Chicago seems to create its own weather system. This summer was the return of the annual Chicago Air and Water show since COVID. Thousands gathered at the lakefront and on rooftops, and waited through a downpour to clear so the Blue Angels could fly. I feel like the clouds represent COVID but they did not stop the spirit of the people of Chicago who look forward with hope. Chicago is my hometown and I believe that the night skyline is the most beautiful anywhere. Many of the buildings have names, some official, others more colloquial. The uncreatively named Blue Cross Blue Shield Tower operates as an unofficial billboard for the city, often cheering on local sports teams. Here, however, it shows #VACC TO SCHOOL, inspiring a return to normalcy for children.
