“Therapy Companion”
Painting on Canvas
Dogs have always been regarded as man's best friend, and nobody loves my grandmother more than her loyal companion, Sonic. A cranky maltipoo who has been by her side for over a decade. Throughout my gradmother's battle with cancer, Sonic has always been there to show her comfort and support. This piece recognizes and honors some of the most important, but overlooked healers on a patient's care team. Research indicates that therapy dogs can provide comfort and joy to patients which can help decrease stress and lower blood pressure. Often during one of the most stressful experiences of someone's life. Patients can form strong bonds with their pets which can translate into a variety of health benefits. For example, increased physicial activity from walking their dog or feelings of relaxation from petting a beloved dog. Pets are significant healers for many patients like my grandmother and I hope this piece inspires health providers to consider how to incorporate a patient's pet into their care, recovery, and comfort.”—Hastings Lorman
