Emergency physicians in military residency programs across the country competed in the annual SimWars competition, which is part of the annual Government Services Symposium facilitated by the Government Services Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. The Air Force team from UC Davis Health took first place in the event.

Escape room-style simulation for pediatric intensive care unit nurses presents a fun, innovative approach to learning

Amid difficult learning conditions associated with the pandemic, UC Davis Health faculty have been brainstorming tactics to keep doctors, medical students and nurses engaged and motivated throughout their training. As a part of the pediatric intensive care unit nurse training program, one session has made progress in helping nurses learn in a fun environment: an escape room-style simulation.

A training session focused on helping pediatric nurses improve and enhance their respiratory assessment skills and nursing interventions for patients with bronchiolitis, septic shock and asthma was presented as an escape room activity. The hands-on experience encouraged nurses to use their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

Quality improvement leaders at UC Davis Health created a simulation activity to help health professions students and trainees identify and report patient safety hazards in the emergency department. The success of the activity is outlined in a paper recently published in Pediatric Emergency Care. The paper, entitled “‘Good Catch, Kiddo’ – Enhancing Patient Safety in the Pediatric Emergency Department Through Simulation,” highlights how simulation is beneficial in helping learners identify and report hazards.

UC Davis simulation center director receives COVID-19 research grant

UC Davis Center for Simulation and Education Enhancement Medical Director Ian Julie, M.D., received a SEED research grant from CITRIS and the Banatao Institute for a research project focused on augmented reality video-assisted clinical care for remote management of COVID-19. Working with a colleague at UC Santa Cruz, Julie aims to extract clinically useful information from a live video stream, augmented with patient information such as blood oxygen saturation level, respiratory rate and heart rate in real-time. The goal is a tool to enable clinicians to rapidly evaluate COVID-19 patients, including remotely.

In March 2020, the simulation team, simulation fellows, faculty and nurses began holding twice daily training sessions helping frontline and ICU providers caring for patients with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

The UC Davis Center for Virtual Care has been reaccredited for five years as a Comprehensive Education Institute by the American College of Surgeons — an honor bestowed on only about 90 simulation centers worldwide.

UC Davis simulation center director receives Dean's Team Award for Excellence in Pre-Clinical Medical Education

UC Davis Center for Simulation and Education Enhancement Medical Director Ian Julie, M.D., received the award for his efforts to link pre-clinical biochemistry studies with the delivery of patient care. Julie and his colleagues used a hybrid approach incorporating simulation to help students understand how basic science concepts provide an essential foundation for clinical practice. Students used their knowledge of biochemistry to evaluate sick patients and assess lab work – making their pre-clinical studies more meaningful and engaging. This innovative approach and enhancement to the curriculum earned the team a monetary award that will be used to further enrich the team’s work.
