3 Wishes Project
“Seeing the family's gratitude and their positive reactions to personalized bereavement items and care made me feel like I was making a meaningful impact. I enjoyed being able to hear stories about the patient and learn about who they were and what was important to them.”
The 3 Wishes Project (3WP) aims to soften end-of-life experiences for patients, families, and healthcare team members by fulfilling a set of wishes for a dying patient and their loved ones. The 3 Wishes Project is a unique approach to infuse humanity, celebrate a patient’s life and their legacy, and support families and healthcare team members alike.
While most wishes are often small and simple, they are incredibly meaningful to families. Past wishes have included playing the patient’s favorite music, providing a patient with a non-hospital blanket, decorating the patient’s room with their favorite memorabilia, and providing the bereaved family with keepsakes such as hand molds, fingerprints, framed pictures, heart rhythm strips, and more. More elaborate wishes have included arranging for a patient to be outside to hold a beloved hedgehog for the first time.
