B. Marie Palo

Brenda Marie Palo has been invited to share her expertise at the upcoming 48th Annual American Association of Medical Dosimetrists (AAMD) Meeting in New Orleans. Palo oversees the management of all Radiation Oncology billing operations and provides analytical support for the departments of Radiation Oncology and Radiology.

Palo, along with Tina Berry, Regional Director of Medical Oncology and Breast Services at Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) Cancer Institute, will be conducting an educational session on "Cancer Related Financial Toxicity."

Cancer care patients face a unique challenge with what is termed "financial toxicity." Care givers, family members and children often experience the trickledown effect of financial hardship. How can care providers better recognize those patients who may be experiencing financial toxicity? Financial hardships can affect cancer patients to the point of toxicity in that stress over the worry of medical bills can affect their will toward recovery.

Their presentation, on behalf of Society for Radiation Oncology Administrators (SROA), will offer guidance toward solutions that will empower patients to take charge of their financial responsibilities after a cancer diagnosis, highlight the need for financial counselors and cost of care estimates, and share the workflow experience of SIH and UC Davis Health recognition of financial toxicity.

The AAMD Annual Meeting, to be held June 4-8, 2023, provides medical dosimetrists and treatment planners from around the world the opportunity to connect with colleagues and learn from experts in the field.
