                              <span><p>Three<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/welcome/">UC Davis Health</a><span>&nbsp;</span>researchers &mdash; a seasoned scientist and two medical students &mdash;&nbsp;have been awarded grants from the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://ciapm.chhs.ca.gov/">California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine</a>.</p>
<p>The initiative supports leading-edge biomedical and health research aimed at improving patient care and advancing health equity.</p>
<p>The UC Davis grant recipients are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Joseph Morrison, a medical student in the dual-degree M.D./Ph.D. program who is in the doctoral phase of his studies with the biomedical engineering graduate group</li>
<li>Nikita Mohapatra, also an M.D./Ph.D. program student who is also working towards her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering</li>
<li><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/basic-sciences/biochemistry/team/faculty/carvajal-carmona">Luis Carvajal-Carmona</a>, associate vice chancellor and professor in the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/basic-sciences/biochemistry/">Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine</a></li>
</ul>
<p>The initiative, which is part of the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.chhs.ca.gov/">California Health &amp; Human Services Agency</a>, awarded grants in two different categories in recent weeks.</p>
<p>One category is the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="&lt;p&gt;https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Representative-Research-Grant-Awardees-have-been-chosen-.html?soid=1141894506213&amp;amp;aid=dJCQzoOloFw&lt;/p&gt;">Representative Research Partnerships Program</a>, which funds precision medicine researchers to work with an academic or community partner. Carvajal-Carmona under this program received $1.7 million to pair up with a <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/federally-qualified-health-center-fqhc/">Federally Qualified Health Center</a> to support genetic testing in rural areas.</p>
<p>The second category is the initiative&rsquo;s inaugural<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Next-Gen-Doctoral-Student-awardees-have-been-chosen-.html?soid=1141894506213&amp;aid=fzcAw_T289U">Next-Gen Representative Research Program</a>, which provided grants to student researchers, mostly at University of California schools. The $1.8 million fund was split among 12 students &mdash; including Morrison and Mohapatra &mdash; to cover their expenses as they step away from traditional medical school curriculum and delve into Ph.D. research projects.</p>
<p>In a striking coincidence, Morrison and Mohapatra are not only medical school colleagues in the same<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-school/academic-programs/MD-program/md-phd/">M.D./Ph.D. program</a><span>&nbsp;</span>&mdash; they also were classmates at Davis Senior High School.</p>
<p>&ldquo;It is already remarkably uncommon for two students from the same high school class to go on to M.D./Ph.D. training, much less end up in the same program,&rdquo; said<a href="https://neurotherapeutics.ucdavis.edu/leadership/john-gray"><span>&nbsp;</span>John A. Gray</a>, director of the UC Davis School of Medicine M.D./Ph.D. program. &ldquo;To now see both of them recognized with the same competitive statewide research award is pretty special."</p>
<h2>Joseph Morrison: Using AI to learn about broken bones</h2>

<p>Morrison&rsquo;s award will allow him to focus on his doctoral research, which he began last academic year. His work aims to develop clinically meaningful, data-driven approaches that improve diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injury across diverse, particularly rural, healthcare settings.</p>
<p>He was inspired to take on the project after learning that a friend who broke a leg didn&rsquo;t completely heal and suffered from chronic pain.</p>
<p>Morrison realized that sometimes people&rsquo;s broken bones fuse back together and other times they don&rsquo;t, which is called nonunion.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Some people who have orthopedic surgeries for whatever reason get their bones fixed but they don&rsquo;t heal back together. I&rsquo;m trying to see if we can predict when nonunion is going to occur based on data that&rsquo;s collected during a standard visit.&rdquo;</p>
<p>To seek answers, Morrison plans to collect X-rays of shin bones and review doctors&rsquo; notes and analyze both using machine learning approaches to accurately predict nonunion. If nonunion can be confidently predicted, Morrison said, then an orthopedic surgeon can intervene earlier than usual with revision treatment, such as inserting a rod into the leg.</p>

<h2>Nikita Mohapatra: Helping patients recover from traumatic brain injury</h2>
<p>Mohapatra&rsquo;s doctoral thesis explores how cumulative social and environmental stress can shape recovery after traumatic brain injury.</p>
<p>Her two-year research project will examine biomarkers of acute disease by studying cellular vesicles &mdash; tiny particles that cells release into the bloodstream and that can be traced back to the specific tissue that released them.</p>
<p>She wants to learn why patients with the same diagnosis can have very different recovery outcomes by connecting social and environmental factors.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We often think of recovery when the injury occurs, but it really began way before that,&rdquo; she said.</p>
<p>Mohapatra wants to examine people being treated for traumatic brain injury and see how lived experiences, such as being exposed to environmental toxins while growing up, prompt measurable biological changes in the body.</p>
<p>&ldquo;In general, there&rsquo;s always this underlying push for precision medicine, but I think it&rsquo;s often thought of in terms of genetics. I want to underline that it&rsquo;s much broader than that,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Our biology is more than DNA.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Luis Carvajal-Carmona: Identifying hereditary conditions earlier in rural settings</h2>

<p>Carvajal-Carmona, an experienced genetic researcher, received $1.7 million to advance equitable precision medicine in<span>&nbsp;</span>Federally Qualified Health Centers.</p>
<p>Many individuals with hereditary cancer and cardiovascular risk remain undiagnosed in rural, underserved communities. Carvajal-Carmona is teaming up with<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.amplahealth.org/">Ampla Health</a><span>&nbsp;</span>in rural counties north of Sacramento to offer genomic screening and identify hereditary conditions earlier.</p>
<p>&ldquo;This study will help pioneer approaches for implementing genomics-based prevention of cancer and heart disease in underserved populations,&rdquo; Carvajal-Carmona said. &ldquo;We hope the results will provide a model for statewide population genomics programs that can identify people at inherited risk before disease develops, enabling early interventions that save lives.&rdquo;</p>
<p>It is believed that nearly 400,000 Californians carry genetic predispositions to cancer or heart disease, Carvajal-Carmona said. However, many do not know they are at increased risk.</p>
<p>&ldquo;This program has the potential to demonstrate how genomic medicine can be delivered equitably and at scale to improve health outcomes across the state,&rdquo; he added.</p>
<p>Carvajal-Carmona&rsquo;s co-principal investigator is Cindy Snelgrove, the chief clinical services officer at Ampla Health. Their team&rsquo;s project was one of only four grants funded by the initiative, from nearly 100 applications.</p></span>

                              <span><p>A<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41372-026-02774-y">new review article</a><span>&nbsp;</span>published in the Journal of Perinatology delivers a strong warning: Neonatal critical care is facing a significant workforce and professional identity crisis, despite the specialty&rsquo;s essential role in caring for the sickest newborns and generating substantial revenue for children&rsquo;s hospitals.</p>

<p>In the article, three neonatologists &mdash;<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/children/team/32209/satyan-lakshminrusimha---neonatology-sacramento/">Satyan Lakshminrusimha</a>,<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://healthy.kaiserpermanente.org/southern-california/physicians/clara-song-5954906">Clara Song</a><span>&nbsp;</span>and<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.rchsd.org/about-us/who-we-are/executive-leadership/">Robin Steinhorn</a><span>&nbsp;</span>&mdash; examine what they describe as the &ldquo;neonatology paradox.&rdquo; The field remains one of the most productive pediatric subspecialties in terms of work relative value units (wRVUs) and hospital revenue generation. Yet many neonatologists experience long hours, increasing clinical complexity, documentation burdens, workforce shortages and compensation disparities.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Neonatologists provide highly specialized critical care for the most vulnerable patients, yet the current system often fails to recognize the true scope and complexity of this work,&rdquo; said Lakshminrusimha, chief of pediatrics, physician-in-chief at UC Davis Children&rsquo;s Hospital and the article&rsquo;s lead author. &ldquo;Without meaningful reforms, we risk worsening workplace challenges and jeopardizing the long-term sustainability of neonatal intensive care.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>The evolution of neonatal care</h2>
<p>The authors note that advances in medicine have dramatically improved survival among premature infants and newborns with complex congenital conditions. These accomplishments represent a major success for modern medicine and have transformed the day-to-day practice of neonatology. Today&rsquo;s practitioners care for infants with increasingly complex and chronic conditions, often requiring prolonged hospitalizations and intensive coordination of care.</p>
<p>The review identifies six major challenges shaping modern neonatal practice:</p>
<ol>
<li>Increased clinical acuity</li>
<li>Complexity</li>
<li>Chronicity</li>
<li>Consultive responsibilities</li>
<li>Charting requirements</li>
<li>Reduced continuity of care</li>
</ol>
<p>Together, these pressures contribute to declining professional satisfaction and increasing concerns about burnout.</p></span>

                              </blockquote><h2>Recommendations for reform</h2>
<p>The article outlines several proposals aimed at strengthening the neonatal workforce and improving physician well-being:</p>
<ul>
<li>Establish staffing models that better account for clinical workload, overnight coverage, administrative responsibilities and educational duties.</li>
<li>Align productivity expectations with actual clinical effort and reduce reliance on metrics that may not adequately capture the complexity of neonatal care.</li>
<li>Advance gender equity through policies that support parental leave, lactation accommodations and access to childcare.</li>
<li>Enhance physician education in medical coding and advocate for reimbursement systems that more accurately reflect pediatric subspecialty care.</li>
<li>Strengthen the professional identity of the specialty by recognizing neonatology as neonatal critical care medicine.</li>
</ul>
<p>The authors also suggest that if these reforms fail to address ongoing workforce concerns, healthcare leaders should evaluate the feasibility of creating independent departments of neonatal critical care medicine to provide greater autonomy, visibility and financial transparency.</p>
<h2>A call to action</h2>
<p>According to the authors, the future of neonatal critical care depends on recognizing the specialty&rsquo;s clinical, academic and financial contributions while creating a more sustainable work environment for physicians.</p>
<p>&ldquo;By addressing workload, compensation, staffing, and professional identity, we can help ensure that future generations of physicians continue to choose neonatal critical care as a rewarding and sustainable career,&rdquo; the authors conclude.</p></div>

<p>The trial is evaluating the investigational <a href="https://www.biospace.com/press-releases/nyra-medical-announces-first-patient-enrollment-in-enhance-early-feasibility-study-advancing-next-generation-mitral-valve-repair-platform">CARLEN System</a>, a transcatheter device designed to support the heart&rsquo;s natural mitral valve without permanently altering its structure. Unlike other transcatheter mitral valve repair procedures, this device aims to preserve the valve&rsquo;s anatomy while improving function.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I learned how to work with mice and do a bunch of experiments, and I really liked it,&rdquo; Clarke said of her undergraduate experience at UC Davis.</p>
<p>After graduating with a degree in<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/majors/neurobiology-physiology-and-behavior">neurobiology, physiology and behavior</a>, she took a job conducting research at UCSF, and four years later got into the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-school/">UC Davis School of Medicine</a>. She&rsquo;s now in the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/mdprogram/research/arc-md/index.html">ARC-MD</a><span>&nbsp;</span>pathway program, short for Academic Research Careers for Medical Doctors. Clarke, who recently completed her third year of medical school, has been named the 2026 recipient of the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/mdprogram/research/ResearchFunding-OConnor.html">Daniel T. O&rsquo;Connor, M.D. Memorial Research Grant</a><span>&nbsp;</span>(DTOC).</p>
<p>The prestigious grant, named for a 1974 alumnus, is given annually to a research-minded medical student who embodies O&rsquo;Connor&rsquo;s values: High-quality research in translational medicine, through a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative, &ldquo;bench to bedside&rdquo; approach. After graduating from the UC Davis School of Medicine, O&rsquo;Connor became a distinguished professor of medicine and pharmacology at UC San Diego. He was internationally known and published more than 400 journal articles before his death in 2014.</p>
<p>His widow Kellie Evans-O&rsquo;Connor helps administer the DTOC award. The grant provides a stipend and health insurance for an academic year.</p>
<h2>An &lsquo;exceptional student&rsquo; with a promising future</h2>
<p>&ldquo;Maria is an exceptional student physician-scientist whose accomplishments, professionalism,&nbsp;drive and clear vision for a career in translational research distinguish her from her peers,&rdquo; said <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/pediatrics/team/21924/jennifer-rosenthal---hospitalist-sacramento/">Jennifer Rosenthal</a>, the UC Davis School of Medicine&rsquo;s executive director of research, training and development.</p>
<p>The award seemed perfectly timed for Clarke.</p>
<p>Medical students who aspire to be physician-scientists usually step aside from the classroom and conduct unpaid research for at least a year.          <description>&lt;p&gt;A new study of people over 90 years old finds significant dementia risk disparities between genders and racial and ethnic groups.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It may seem natural to assume that people experience cognitive decline after age 90, but until recently, researchers had limited evidence about how advanced age affects the brain. This major knowledge gap will need to be addressed as people live longer. By 2100, there could be around <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/article/S0140-6736(20)30677-2/fulltext">230 million people 90 or older</a> on Earth. As a result, scientists, clinicians and policymakers are seeking more information to help them support this expanding demographic.<figure class="img-left">

<p>Researchers at <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/welcome/">UC Davis Health</a> and Kaiser Permanente have helped fill this knowledge gap by tracking a large group of 90+ year-olds since 2018 &mdash; the <a href="https://rachelwhitmer.ucdavis.edu/lifeafter90">LifeAfter90 study</a>. Their <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhl/article/PIIS2666-7568(26)00066-8/fulltext">most recent findings</a>, which were published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, delineate dementia risk disparities between genders and racial and ethnic groups. The study also revealed how older brains respond to genetic variables.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We know from other studies, done in people 65 and older, that there are differences in dementia rates, and women tend to have higher risk, but nobody knew if that was true after 90,&rdquo; said <a href="https://rachelwhitmer.ucdavis.edu/">Rachel Whitmer</a>, UC Davis Health professor of public health sciences and neurology, chief of epidemiology and senior author on the study. &ldquo;We need to understand who is most affected by dementia after 90 and how the main Alzheimer's risk gene (APOE) factors in.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>LifeAfter90</h2>
<p>LifeAfter90 participants are Kaiser Permanente members, 90 or older, who enrolled before they had any signs of dementia. Led by Whitmer, researchers have closely followed these patients, examining them every six months to track their cognitive health.</p>
<p>Because participants are long-term Kaiser Permanente members, the LifeAfter90 team has access to decades of health information, in some cases dating back to the 1960s. The Lancet study examined medical records from over 800 participants, median age 92. This is the first effort to investigate dementia after 90 in a highly diverse cohort.</p>
<p>The researchers found that, like their younger counterparts, women 90 and older are at higher risk for dementia &mdash; two-fold greater than men. There were also racial and ethnic risk disparities, similar to those of younger groups. Black participants had a 75% greater risk than Asian participants.</p>
<p>&ldquo;It is striking that the racial and ethnic disparities in dementia risk observed in younger adults continue into the tenth decade of life,&rdquo; said Hilary Colbeth, a UC Davis postdoctoral scholar in public health sciences and first author on the paper. &ldquo;Specifically, Black and Hispanic participants had significantly higher dementia incidence rates than white and Asian participants.&rdquo;</p>]]></content:encoded><link>https://health.ucdavis.edu/research/news/headlines/dementia-after-age-90/2026/08</link></item>

This was particularly true for youth experiencing anxiety, depression or other mental health challenges.<figure class="img-left">

<p>Researchers examined how four lifestyle factors &mdash; sleep quality, screen time, physical activity and diet &mdash; influenced the relationship between mental health symptoms and academic and social functioning in children ages 10 to 13. They found that sleep was the strongest factor associated with better grades and fewer social problems. Screen time was the second strongest factor.</p>
<p>"This finding surprised us," said&nbsp;<a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/psychiatry/team/43003/jason-smucny-psychiatry-general-psychiatry-neuroscience-research-sacramento">Jason Smucny</a>,&nbsp;the study's first author and a computational neuroscientist in the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/psychiatry/">Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences</a>.          <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Scientists at the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-school/">UC Davis School of Medicine</a><span>&nbsp;</span>have identified a naturally occurring metabolite that repairs gut damage caused by HIV infection and significantly improves the effectiveness of<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://hivinfo.nih.gov/understanding-hiv/fact-sheets/hiv-treatment-basics">antiretroviral therapy</a><span>&nbsp;</span>(ART) in the nonhuman primate model of HIV/AIDS.<figure class="img-left">

<p>The biotherapeutic metabolite, 10-hydroxystearic acid (10-HSA), is produced by the beneficial gut bacterium<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8527090/"><em>Lactiplantibacillus plantarum</em></a><em>. L. plantarum</em><span>&nbsp;</span>is a common lactic acid bacterium found in many over-the-counter probiotics and fermented foods. It also occurs naturally in the human gut.</p>
<p>The<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41564-026-02433-0">findings were published in Nature Microbiology</a>.</p>
<p>"Current HIV therapies are remarkably effective at controlling viral replication, but they do not fully repair the profound damage HIV causes in the gut," said<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medmicro/faculty/dandekar/">Satya Dandekar</a>, senior author of the study and a distinguished professor in the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medmicro/">Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology</a><span>&nbsp;</span>at UC Davis Health. "Our findings suggest that restoring the gut's structural and immune health can enhance antiretroviral treatment and opens an entirely new avenue for achieving more durable control of HIV.&rdquo;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/overview/about-hiv-and-aids/what-are-hiv-and-aids">HIV and the late stage of the infection, AIDS</a>, remain<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/hiv-aids">major global public health issue</a>s. In 2025, an estimated<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.unaids.org/en/resources/fact-sheet">40.9 million people</a><span>&nbsp;</span>were living with HIV, and approximately 1.2 million people acquired new HIV infections. In 2025, around 570,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses worldwide.</p>

<h2>HIV damages gut immune system</h2>
<p>Gut-associated lymphoid tissue, the body&rsquo;s largest immune tissue and key regulator of the body's immune system, is an early target of HIV. The virus severely damages the immune and epithelial cells in the gut&rsquo;s lining. This damage leads to an inflamed, leaky gut, a weakened defense system and decreased nutrient absorption. The virus also disrupts mitochondrial function (<a href="https://www.genome.gov/genetics-glossary/Mitochondria">mitochondria</a><span>&nbsp;</span>are organelles that generate energy within the cells).&nbsp;</p>
<p>Even with strict adherence to ART, many people living with HIV have persistent gut inflammation caused by the virus.<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://microbiome.ucdavis.edu/news/mapping-pathway-gut-health-hiv-and-siv-infections">Previous research</a><span>&nbsp;</span>from Dandekar&rsquo;s lab showed<span>&nbsp;</span><em>L. plantarum</em><span>&nbsp;</span>could quickly heal the chronically inflamed leaky gut associated with HIV.</p>
<p>For this study, the researchers identified metabolites produced by<span>&nbsp;</span><em>L. plantarum</em><span>&nbsp;</span>in the virally inflamed gut environment in the non-human primate model of HIV/AIDS. Among the hundreds of molecules created by<span>&nbsp;</span><em>L. plantarum,<span>&nbsp;</span></em>one metabolite, 10-HSA, emerged as the strongest candidate for repairing the gut barrier and reducing inflammation.</p>
<p>Using<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://hpmi.ucsf.edu/x-ray-crystallography">X-ray crystallography</a><span>&nbsp;</span>to visualize 10-HSA interactions at the atomic level, researchers demonstrated that 10-HSA directly binds to<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15497675/">PPAR-alpha</a>, a nuclear receptor that regulates key biological processes.</p>
<p>This binding promoted<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8055951/">histone crotonylation</a>, an<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/genomics-and-health/epigenetics/index.html">epigenetic</a><span>&nbsp;</span>modification that helps regulate gene activity. The resulting cascade of cellular events reprogrammed gene expression to restore mitochondrial function and energy metabolism while supporting repair of the gut lining.</p>
<p>Researchers also found that 10-HSA increased mitochondrial respiration of gut epithelial cells during HIV inflammatory conditions, boosting energy-generating capacity and reducing harmful reactive oxygen species.</p>

<h2>Testing the approach in nonhuman primates</h2>
<p>To determine whether the benefits of 10-HSA translate to living organisms, the team conducted two independent studies at the UC Davis<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://cnprc.ucdavis.edu/">National Biomedical Research Institute</a><span>&nbsp;</span>in non-human primates infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), a close relative of HIV.</p>
<ul>
<li>The first study evaluated 10-HSA alone without ART. This led to intestinal repair, improved key markers of gut function, improved mitochondrial health, reduced inflammatory signaling and partially restored the gut microbiota.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The second study evaluated 10-HSA in combination with ART. Significantly, the combined treatment showed faster clearance of viral burden than ART alone. The combination also promoted faster recovery of gut immune cells, reduced immune activation, restored epithelial barrier integrity and restored beneficial gut microbiota and microbial diversity.</li>
</ul>
<p>&ldquo;The findings suggest repairing the tissue damage caused by HIV may be as important as suppressing the virus itself with antiretroviral therapy,&rdquo; said Dylan Kramer, first author of the study and recent Ph.D. graduate from the Dandekar Lab. &ldquo;By rebuilding the gut barrier, restoring mitochondrial function and reducing inflammation, 10-HSA helps create conditions that support stronger immune recovery and more effective antiviral therapy for HIV.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The authors caution that the results are from preclinical models. The studies showed no adverse effects. The research supports testing the safety and effectiveness of 10-HSA in humans.</p>
<p>"Our research shows that host health, microbial health and viral control are deeply interconnected," Dandekar said. She noted that treating the damaged gut ecosystem facilitates recovery of the immune system, leading to regained functions that have been lost during HIV infection. Additionally, treating the damaged gut during HIV infection can improve outcomes beyond what antiviral drugs can achieve alone.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The restoration of gut barrier integrity and microbial balance through 10-HSA supplementation may represent a promising therapeutic strategy, with implications that extend beyond HIV to other chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract,&rdquo; Dandekar said.</p>

         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Researchers have reported positive results from the <a href="https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT05126758">Phase 3 HOPE-3</a> clinical trial evaluating deramiocel, an investigational cell therapy infusion for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare and progressive genetic disease that causes irreversible muscle weakness and heart damage.<figure class="img-left">

<p><a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(26)01385-1/fulltext">The study,</a> published in The Lancet, found that patients who received deramiocel experienced significantly slower disease progression compared with those receiving a placebo, demonstrating benefits across multiple measures of muscle and cardiac function.</p>
<p>Duchenne muscular dystrophy <a href="https://www.mda.org/disease/duchenne-muscular-dystrophy">affects approximately 1 in 3,500 to 5,000 boys</a> worldwide and progressively weakens skeletal, respiratory and cardiac muscles. While advances in care have improved survival, there remains a critical need for therapies to address multiple aspects of the disease, particularly in non-ambulatory patients with advanced disease.</p>
<p>In the HOPE-3 study, 106 participants with advanced DMD were randomized to receive quarterly infusions of deramiocel or placebo over 12 months. Patients treated with deramiocel showed significantly less decline in upper limb function, a critical measure of independence that affects activities such as feeding, grooming and using technology. The treatment also demonstrated advantages on measures of cardiac function and disease-related heart scarring, two major causes of illness and premature death in DMD.</p>
<p>&ldquo;What makes these findings especially meaningful is that deramiocel demonstrated effects across multiple systems impacted by Duchenne muscular dystrophy,&rdquo; said <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/pmr/team/33/craig-mcdonald---neuromuscular-medicine---pediatric-rehabilitation-medicine-sacramento/">Craig McDonald</a>, chair of the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/pmr/">Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation</a> at <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu">UC Davis Health</a> and lead study investigator. &ldquo;Preserving arm and hand function is critically important for maintaining independence and quality of life in people living with Duchenne. At the same time, protecting heart function is essential for long-term health. Seeing evidence of the benefit in both areas is a game changer and represents a potentially important advance for patients and families.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>A different approach to treating Duchenne</h2>

                              <span><p>UC Davis Professor of Neurology <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/neurology/team/821/sarah-tomaszewski-farias---neuropsychology---cognitive-neuroscience---alzheimer-s-disease---dementia-sacramento/">Sarah Tomaszewski Farias</a> has been awarded a $3.3 million five-year grant from <a href="https://www.nia.nih.gov/">The National Institute on Aging</a> to study if cultural differences affect how people perceive cognitive changes as they age. This perceived cognitive aging is referred to as subjective cognitive decline (SCD).</p>

<p>&nbsp;&ldquo;Subjective cognitive decline is when an older person feels their cognition is getting worse, but when we test them using neuropsychological tests, they're still performing within the normal range,&rdquo; explained Tomaszewski Farias, a leader in studying cognitive decline in older adults.</p>
<p>Understanding subjective cognitive decline may have important implications for healthcare providers.</p>
<p>&ldquo;There was a lot of clinical lore around what we used to call the &lsquo;worried well.&rsquo; These were people that had cognitive complaints but did fine on cognitive testing. It was thought that they were depressed or anxious and often their complaints were dismissed,&rdquo; Tomaszewski Farias said.</p>
<p>However, studies have shown that SCD can be a risk factor to developing more objective cognitive decline. That includes potentially mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's dementia. Current SCD research suffers from three main issues:</p>
<ul>
<li>The overlapping symptoms of SCD and depression: People who are depressed can feel like their memory is poor. The common symptoms might obscure the right diagnosis.</li>
<li>Lack of representation: SCD research as a risk for Alzheimer's disease has been studied mainly in highly educated, white people.</li>
<li>Lack of longitudinal studies: Most of the studies were done at only one point in time rather than over time.</li>
</ul>
<p>Tomaszewski Farias&rsquo; new study will look at how SCD in a diverse group of older adults is associated with objective cognitive outcomes and risk for dementia. It will follow people over time to see if any participants with subjective cognitive concerns go on to develop objective cognitive impairment and dementia.</p>
<h2>Methodology</h2>
<p>The study will examine around 4,000 participants who are at least 55 years old. It will utilize a <a href="https://www.highergov.com/grant/P30AG072972/">longitudinal cohort</a> in the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/alzheimers-research/">UC Davis Alzheimer&rsquo;s Disease Research Center,</a> where Tomaszewski Farias is the clinical core leader. Research will also use three cohorts of Kaiser Permanente patients led by <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/phs/team/32262/rachel-whitmer---public-health-sciences-division-of-epidemiology-sacramento/">Professor of Neurology and Public Health Sciences Rachel Whitmer</a> (<a href="https://rachelwhitmer.ucdavis.edu/lifeafter90">Life After 90</a>, <a href="https://rachelwhitmer.ucdavis.edu/khandle">KHANDLE</a> and <a href="https://rachelwhitmer.ucdavis.edu/star">STAR</a>).</p>
<p>In addition to measuring subjective and objective cognitive decline, the study will examine brain scans and blood samples for biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease and cerebrovascular disease.</p></span>

                              </blockquote><h2>Types of subjective cognitive decline that might show up differently across groups</h2>
<p>SCD can be linked to different cognitive concerns.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The term subjective cognitive decline doesn't specify the nature or the types of cognitive concerns that people have,&rdquo; Tomaszewski Farias explained. &ldquo;It may be important to learn if people are reporting mainly memory concerns, or cognitive changes relating to thinking, like executive functions.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Tomaszewski Farias elaborated: If people are seeing a lot of memory problems, then that may be a sign of early Alzheimer's disease. Whereas if people have more executive difficulties, like multitasking, working memory, processing speed-related deficits, then that may fit more with cerebrovascular disease.</p>
<p>To measure subjective cognitive decline, the team will use the Everyday Cognition (ECog) scale. ECog is a widely used questionnaire developed by Tomaszewski Farias and UC Davis researchers two decades ago that was recently updated. It includes memory-related questions, such as whether someone is forgetting recent events and language items, such as difficulty finding words. It will also ask about spatial abilities, like navigating in one's environment, and executive functions, such as multitasking and planning for daily activities.</p>
<p>The new study will ask: Are there types of subjective complaints that are linked to specific diseases? And if so, could these complaints help to predict future illness?</p>
<p>&ldquo;We will look at ways to efficiently identify people who are at increased risk for early Alzheimer's disease and other forms of cognitive decline,&rdquo; Tomaszewski Farias said.</p>
<h2>Cultural differences and clinical implications</h2>
<p><strong><br></strong>There's a lot to disentangle, said Tomaszewski Farias. &ldquo;One size is probably not going to fit all in terms of identifying the red flags of subjective cognitive decline. It may be very culturally dependent in terms of how people express what they are noticing in their cognitive abilities.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The study will look at the extent to which people are worried about the subjective changes versus chalking it up to normal aging. Studies have shown that some people are picking up something that was missed on their cognitive testing. They are noticing internal changes that clinicians can't yet see on the testing.</p>
<p>It is still unclear how far in advance people start noticing these changes before a clinical diagnosis can be made. Research indicated that the closest is probably 5 to 10 years before a diagnosis.</p>
<p>&ldquo;For clinicians, we hope to better figure out or define what are the subjective types of complaint that are a bigger red flag than others,&rdquo; Tomaszewski Farias said.</p>

                              <span><p>UC Davis Health has launched a pilot study to evaluate how at-home HPV self-collection for cervical cancer screening can be integrated into a health system setting. The hope is to better reach patients who are due or overdue for screening.</p>

<p>The study is a collaboration with <a href="http://www.getteal.com/">Teal Health</a>, which developed the first FDA-authorized self-collection device for at-home cervical cancer screening. It is funded through a National Institutes of Health Small Business Innovation Research Grant received by Teal Health.</p>
<p>Researchers will explore whether offering an at-home option can help improve screening completion rates and make it easier for patients to stay up to date on recommended screenings. They&rsquo;ll also examine how the approach fits within existing care frameworks and whether it can reduce the burden on care teams. The goal is to create a model for wider health system adoption.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The future of preventive care lies in delivering evidence-based services that meet people where they are and making it easier to access services that protect long-term health,&rdquo; said <a href="https://physicians.ucdavis.edu/details/73692/heather-leisy-clinical_informatics-public_health_and_preventive_medicine">Heather Leisy, </a>UC Davis Health&rsquo;s medical director of population health quality. &ldquo;By expanding screening options, we can help more people receive the screenings that prevent disease and improve long-term health."</p>
<h2>Cervical cancer screening at home</h2>
<p>The pilot works like this: UC Davis Health patients ages 30 to 65 who are due or overdue for cervical cancer screening may receive an invitation through MyChart, email or text message or from their care team. Eligible patients will receive a screening kit by mail, collect a sample at home and then return it through the mail for testing. Samples will be tested by UC Davis Health&rsquo;s in-house lab and results will go directly into patients&rsquo; electronic health records.</p>

<p>In addition to evaluating patient participation and screening completion rates, the pilot will examine how an at-home screening pathway can be integrated into routine health system operations. Teams from across UC Davis Health will work with Teal Health to integrate ordering, lab processing and results into existing systems.</p>
<p>"This collaboration gives us an exciting opportunity to explore how at-home screening can expand access to preventive care and offer a more convenient, accessible and patient-centered option for staying up to date on screenings,&rdquo; said lead researcher on the study <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/cancer/team/42446/julie-dang-/">Julie Dang.</a> She is also the assistant director for community outreach and engagement at&nbsp;<a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/cancer/">UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center</a>.</p>
<p>At the conclusion of the pilot, researchers will compare outcomes with traditional clinic-based screening approaches. They will measure screening completion rates, patient participation, the program&rsquo;s ability to reach people who are overdue for care and its feasibility.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The oral medication was approved by the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/">U.S. Food and Drug Administration</a> in 2024 to treat <a href="https://www.hematology.org/education/patients/anemia">anemia</a> caused by <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/conditions/kidney-disease/chronic-kidney-disease">chronic kidney disease</a> in adults. The drug is currently approved for once-daily use.</p>
<p>The new trial evaluated the safety of administering it three times a week rather than daily, aligning treatment with a typical patient&rsquo;s dialysis clinic visits.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Offering patients a treatment that aligns with their regularly scheduled dialysis sessions ensures adherence and reduces the burden of managing yet another medication at home,&rdquo; said <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/internal-medicine/team/73700/shuchi-anand-nephrology-kidney-sacramento-elk-grove">Shuchi Anand</a>, a kidney specialist and professor in the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/internal-medicine/">Department of Internal Medicine</a> at UC Davis Health.</p>
<p>Anand served on the executive steering committee for the clinical trial, helping to design the study, oversee its implementation and evaluate its outcomes.</p>
<h2>Need for new treatment options</h2>
<p>Many patients on dialysis develop anemia because damaged kidneys produce less <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3579209/">erythropoietin</a> (EPO), the hormone that stimulates red blood cell production. Frequent blood draws and iron loss during dialysis sessions can further lower blood counts.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Treatment typically includes iron supplementation, EPO-stimulating injections and, more recently, oral medications to help reduce fatigue and prevent complications associated with low red blood cell levels.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The goal of this trial was to broaden the range of treatment options available to patients,&rdquo; said Anand. &ldquo;We haven't seen a new anemia therapy for people on dialysis in more than two decades. <p>The<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/news/headlines/how-war-trauma-affects-vietnamese-americans-brain-health/2025/07">UC Davis-led study</a><span>&nbsp;</span>of more than 500 older Vietnamese Americans captured the scope of war, displacement and immigration trauma that occurred in the late 1970&rsquo;s and early 1980&rsquo;s. The findings suggest resilience may help soften the long-term mental health effects of war-related trauma, offering insight that could inform healthier aging strategies for other trauma-exposed communities.</p>
<p>Now, new research further examines how the trauma, resilience and other life experiences interact to affect brain health and aging.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We know that adversity and hardship are a part of life, and this is especially true for Vietnamese Americans who have faced war,&rdquo; said Oanh Meyer, senior author and leader of a pioneering Vietnamese American cognitive aging study. &ldquo;We want to know how these experiences affect later life cognitive and mental health.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Meyer is part of<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/welcome/">UC Davis Health&rsquo;s</a><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/neurology/">Department of Neurology</a><span>&nbsp;</span>and research faculty with the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/alzheimers-research/">Alzheimer&rsquo;s Disease Research Center</a>. She also leads the landmark study, known as<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/neurology/research/labs/dementia-and-disparities">Vietnamese Insights into Cognitive Aging Program, or VIP.</a><span>&nbsp;</span>Funded by the National Institute on Aging, the effort examines how life experiences, resilience and cultural factors shape cognitive aging and dementia risk.</p>

<p>The new study is titled,<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1041610226000487">&ldquo;Aging and resilience in Vietnamese American older adults: Evidence from the Vietnamese Insights into Cognitive Aging Program.&rdquo;</a><span>&nbsp;</span>Researchers examined whether resilience may help protect mental health later in life among older Vietnamese Americans who experienced early adversity and war-related trauma.</p>
<p>&ldquo;If we can understand what contributes to resilience or protects against depression in later life, this could have implications for brain health,&rdquo; Meyer explained.</p>
<p>The findings may have broader implications for aging research. As<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/conditions/neurology/neurodegenerative-diseases/dementia">dementia</a><span>&nbsp;</span>rates rise, scientists are looking beyond genetics to understand how experiences across the lifespan &mdash; from education and stress to trauma, social support and mental health &mdash; influence cognitive aging.</p>
<h2>When resilience becomes protective</h2>
<p>In interviews for the earlier study, participants described fleeing danger, enduring hunger, living through imprisonment and being separated from loved ones. Yet alongside those memories, many spoke about faith, family, gratitude and the ability to adapt.</p>
<p>The newer, 2026 study, published in<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/international-psychogeriatrics">International Psychogeriatrics</a>, analyzed data from 511 Vietnamese American adults aged 65 and older who are part of VIP.          <title>UC Davis Health study highlights health equity challenges, financial burden of aesthetic surgery complications</title>

         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Researchers from <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-center/">UC Davis Medical Center</a> have identified significant socioeconomic disparities among patients seeking treatment for complications after aesthetic surgery, according to a new study published in <a href="https://www.jprasopen.com/">JPRAS Open</a>.<figure class="img-left">

<p>The study, <a href="https://www.jprasopen.com/article/S2352-5878(26)00216-0/fulltext">&ldquo;Aesthetic Surgery Complications in Private Practice Settings: Insights to Optimize Patient Access and Outcomes,&rdquo;</a> examined patients who visited UC Davis Medical Center between 2020 and 2023 with complications following cosmetic procedures performed at other facilities. Researchers evaluated patient demographics, complication patterns, healthcare utilization and the financial impact on patients, insurers and healthcare systems.</p>
<p>Among the study's key findings:</p>
<ul>
<li>Patients with reported complications were disproportionately Black, Hispanic and Medicaid-insured compared with the overall emergency department population.</li>
<li>Nearly half of procedures had been performed outside traditional United States surgical settings, most commonly in Mexico and the Dominican Republic.</li>
<li>Tobacco and cannabis use were associated with significantly higher rates of infection and a greater likelihood of requiring additional intervention.</li>
<li>Complications generated substantial healthcare costs for government sponsored insurance programs. The median hospital charge for patients being treated for the complications exceeded $43,000 per person and surpassed $125,000 among those who ultimately required a new surgery.</li>
</ul>
<p>These findings highlight the often-overlooked downstream costs associated with aesthetic surgery complications and the burden they place on patients, healthcare systems and public payors.</p>
<p>The study noted that patients with lower incomes may be more likely to seek low-cost procedures without adequate consideration of surgeon qualifications, facility accreditation, or complication risks.</p>
<p>&ldquo;As demand for aesthetic surgery continues to grow, ensuring that patients have access to safe, high-quality care is increasingly important,&rdquo; said co-author Scott Levin, chief resident in <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/plasticsurgery/">Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery</a> at <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/welcome/">UC Davis Health</a>. &ldquo;Our findings suggest that complications from cosmetic procedures disproportionately affect vulnerable patient populations, creating challenges not only for patients themselves but also for the healthcare systems that care for them. Improving access to safe aesthetic care is ultimately both a patient safety and health equity priority.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Lead author Nina Yu noted that the findings underscore the importance of understanding the social and economic factors that influence patient decision-making and postoperative outcomes.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Our study highlights that complications from aesthetic surgery extend beyond the operating room,&rdquo; Yu said. &ldquo;Improving patient education, optimizing preoperative risk assessment and expanding access to qualified providers may help reduce preventable complications and improve outcomes for patients.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The researchers conclude that interventions focused on patient education, risk stratification, access to qualified surgeons and health equity may help reduce complications while alleviating financial burdens on patients and healthcare systems alike.</p>

                              <span><p>Cancer cells are quick to develop resistance to anti-tumor drugs. New research by scientists from the University of California, Davis shows how cancers adapt to evade a class of anti-tumor drugs called BET inhibitors and offers hope for more effective therapies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers showed that when BET inhibitors eliminate their target protein, BRD4, cancer cells compensate by increasing the production of a related protein called BRD2, which takes over BRD4&rsquo;s epigenetic functions and allows the tumor to survive and grow. The team showed that many different cancers adapt to BET inhibition in this way, including pancreatic, blood, prostate, brain, breast, skin, and lung cancers.&nbsp;The results, published&nbsp;May 2 in&nbsp;<a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s11658-026-00922-y">Cellular and Molecular Biology Letters</a>,&nbsp;suggest that developing a combination treatment that targets both proteins simultaneously could block resistance before it can take root.</p>
<p>&ldquo;If cancer cells can compensate in this way, then just targeting BRD4 is not going to be sufficient,&rdquo; said first author Suyakarn (Sonia) Archasappawat, a Ph.D. candidate in the&nbsp;<a href="https://integrativepath.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/">Graduate Group in Integrative Pathobiology</a>. &ldquo;Our results suggest that we could improve patient outcomes across multiple cancers by targeting BRD2 in combination with BRD4 inhibition.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Preventing cancer cell reprogramming&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Cancer cells rely on epigenetic changes&mdash; alterations to the way that DNA is used&mdash;to grow, avoid the immune system, and spread. BET inhibitors are a class of potential cancer drugs that shut down this epigenetic reprogramming by targeting a BET protein called BRD4. In the lab, BET inhibitors are very effective at suppressing tumor growth, but they&rsquo;ve been less effective in clinical trials.</p>
<p>&ldquo;People have tried to develop BET inhibitor cancer treatments for a long time, but clinical responses have been modest and short-lived because cancers quickly develop resistance,&rdquo; said senior author <a href="https://biology.ucdavis.edu/people/chang-il-hwang">Chang-il Hwang</a>, an associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics and a member of <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/cancer/">UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.</a> He is also Archasappawat&rsquo;s Ph.D. adviser. &ldquo;Understanding how cancer cells adapt and respond to BET inhibition could reveal vulnerabilities and guide more effective therapies.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Following an unexpected clue</h2>
<p>The project began when an unexpected datapoint caught Archasappawat&rsquo;s eye. In a separate study, the Hwang lab was investigating why a specific subtype of pancreatic cancer is particularly susceptible to BET inhibition. When Archasappawat examined the RNA sequencing data from those cancer cells, she noticed a marked increase in BRD2 expression after the cells were treated with a BET inhibitor.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I was so puzzled, but I thought it might be something that the cells do to adapt and survive under pressure of the treatment,&rdquo; she said.</p>
<p>Since there was almost no mention of this phenomenon in previously published papers, Archasappawat began digging through publicly available datasets to see if it had occurred elsewhere.</p>
<p>Altogether, she analyzed 51 datasets that examined how treatment with JQ1, the most well-studied BET inhibitor, affected gene expression. In all of the datasets&mdash;which included prostate, breast, brain, skin, gastrointestinal, lung, pediatric, gynecologic and blood cancers&mdash;JQ1 treatment was associated with increased BRD2 expression.</p>
<p>To confirm these results, the team treated eight different lab-grown mouse and human cancers with JQ1. In all cases, BRD2 transcription rates increased after JQ1 treatment. When they used genetic methods to reduce the cancers&rsquo; ability to express BRD2, the cancers became more susceptible to treatment with JQ1 and other BET inhibitors.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;This shows that BRD2 upregulation contributes to cancer resistance against BET inhibitors,&rdquo; Archasappawat said. &ldquo;If you close a major highway, the traffic doesn&rsquo;t disappear, it just reroutes. BRD2 is the alternative route that cancer cells use when BRD4 is shut down so that they can survive, proliferate, and eventually metastasize.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Future research should focus on understanding the differences between BRD2 and BRD4 and developing drugs that specifically target BRD2, the researchers say. Targeting both BRD2 and BRD4 simultaneously could prevent resistance before it can start, which would improve treatment outcomes for patients.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Most cancer patients have to undergo multiple rounds of treatment because of drug resistance &mdash; it&rsquo;s almost the expected next step &mdash; but I don't think it has to be inevitable,&rdquo; Archasappawat said. &ldquo;If we can identify how cancer cells adapt to resist treatment, we may be able to intercept resistance before it fully locks in.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;We found that people&rsquo;s moment-to-moment impressions of their cognitive abilities were closely aligned with their actual performance. This could help lead to possible earlier detection of cognitive decline and Alzheimer&rsquo;s risk than standard cognitive testing,&rdquo; she said.</p>

<h2>Using smartwatches to prompt real-time cognitive assessments</h2>
<p>The study followed 162 older adults, with an average age of around 72. They all had concerns about memory or cognitive changes but scored within normal limits on standard cognitive tests prior to the study.</p>
<p>For one week, the participants received prompts on an Apple Watch four times a day. Each time, they rated their mental sharpness and their mood &mdash; such as how stressed, fatigued or depressed they felt. They also completed brief cognitive tasks to measure processing speed and attention directly through the Apple Watch.</p>
<p>Unlike standard testing, which often relies on people recalling how they have felt over weeks or months, this approach captured cognition in real time. It&rsquo;s a method known as ecological momentary assessment.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Usually, in a clinic or a research setting, we have people do tests and ask them to retrospectively say how much they have problems with their memory. A lot of times, their test results and how they perceive their memory problem aren't correlated,&rdquo; Tomaszewski Farias explained.</p>
<p>In this study, researchers measured both subjective mental sharpness and objective cognitive performance during regular, daily life.</p>
<p>&ldquo;When the participants were performing cognitive tests and rating their mental sharpness, it was happening throughout their day &mdash; whether they were doing chores at home or out shopping. We were capturing their cognition in real time, rather than having them come into a clinic where it's very quiet and in a very artificial contrived environment,&rdquo; Tomaszewski Farias said.</p>
<p>The researchers looked at how closely the participants&rsquo; ratings of mental sharpness corresponded to their objective performance.                               <span><p>Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-center/team/32326/angela-jarman---emergency-medicine-sacramento/">Angela Jarman</a> has been named a recipient of the <a href="https://www.saem.org/">Society for Academic Emergency Medicine</a> (SAEM) <a href="https://www.saem.org/research/saem-awards/saem-award-winners">Young Investigator Award</a>.</p>
<p>The award honors SAEM members for their outstanding commitment to and achievement in research during the early stages of their academic careers.</p>
<p>Jarman becomes the third current <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/welcome/">UC Davis Health</a> emergency medicine physician to receive this distinction, joining previous honorees <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-center/team/21801/bryn-mumma---emergency-medicine-sacramento/">Bryn Mumma</a> and <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-center/team/1349/daniel-nishijima---emergency-medicine-sacramento/">Daniel Nishijima</a>.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Dr. Jarman&rsquo;s recognition with the SAEM Young Investigator Award reflects her dedication to advancing emergency medicine through rigorous, impactful research,&rdquo; said <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/children/team/337/james-holmes--jr----emergency-medicine-sacramento/">James F.                               </blockquote><h2>Advancing health equity in emergency care</h2>
<p>Jarman&rsquo;s research explores how biological sex and gender influence diagnosis and care in emergency medicine, with a particular focus on venous thromboembolism, including pulmonary embolism (PE). Her work examines why women are often over tested compared to men &mdash; and yet are diagnosed with PE less often than men. Her research looks at both clinical factors and potential cognitive biases that may lead physicians to overestimate the risk of PE in female patients, yet underdiagnose and undertreat women with the condition. &nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;By identifying the factors driving why women are often tested more compared to men, we can bring greater precision to diagnostic decision-making and help reduce health disparities,&rdquo; Jarman said. &ldquo;Shining a light on this issue allows us to advance health equity by using data-driven insights to minimize unnecessary testing and improve care for women and other underrepresented populations.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>About the Young Investigator Award</h2>
<p>SAEM, a not-for-profit organization, aims to improve the care of acutely ill and injured patients through research and education.</p>
<p>The Society&rsquo;s core mission includes supporting research that generates new insights, and the Young Investigator Award recognizes those who have achieved early success in this sphere.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I am honored to receive this national recognition for my work to advance health equity,&rdquo; Jarman said, who credits her success to the support of the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/ctsc/area/education/bircwh/">BIRCWH program (Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women&rsquo;s Health)</a> and the Department of Emergency Medicine.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Their investment in me over the past several years has been essential to building my research program and underscores the critical role of career development funding in helping early-career faculty grow and succeed in academic medicine,&rdquo; Jarman said.</p></div>

         <title>UC Davis Health among first in the nation to offer new clinical trial for high-risk heart patients</title>

<p>The <a href="https://supiramedical.com/supira-medical-announces-fda-approval-for-support-ii-pivotal-trial-advances-in-cardiogenic-shock-and-appointment-of-d-keith-grossman-to-board-of-directors/">SUPPORT II Pivotal Study</a> is assessing the investigational Supira System, a low-profile <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK554379/">percutaneous ventricular assist device</a> (pVAD) that provides temporary hemodynamic support during high-risk <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK556123/">percutaneous coronary intervention</a>.</p>
<p>The trial will enroll up to 385 patients across as many as 40 sites in the United States to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the system. Patients are randomized to the investigational pVAD system or a larger commercially available pVAD system.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We are excited to participate in this clinical trial and contribute to advancing care for some of our highest-risk cardiovascular patients,&rdquo; said <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/surgery/team/1432/garrett-wong---cardiology---cardiovascular-medicine---internal-medicine---interventional-cardiology-sacramento/">Garrett Wong</a>, clinical professor of <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/internal-medicine/cardiology/">cardiovascular medicine</a> and co-principal investigator of the study. &ldquo;This trial enables us to offer a procedure to patients who would otherwise be considered too high risk.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>What is a pVAD system?</h2>
<p>Cardiologists use pVADs during stent placement or angioplasty procedures to support blood flow for high-risk patients with severe coronary artery disease or comorbidities.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Additionally, pVADs are used to treat patients suffering from cardiogenic shock, a condition that can occur following a severe heart attack. The condition is linked to a high rate of morbidity as a patient&rsquo;s heart is suddenly too weak to adequately pump blood to vital organs.</p>
<p>The device in this clinical trial is smaller than current devices. The system includes multiple sensors to collect real-time aortic and ventricular pressures and help guide clinical management.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Achieving high flow rates has traditionally required larger devices, which can present challenges with both vascular access and positioning,&rdquo; said <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/internal-medicine/team/43097/tai-pham-cardiovascular-medicine-sacramento">Tai Pham</a>, assistant professor of <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/internal-medicine/cardiology/">cardiovascular medicine</a> and co-principal investigator of the study. &ldquo;This investigational system&rsquo;s low-profile design aims to reduce the risk of vascular complications associated with larger commercial devices while still providing full hemodynamic support during high-risk coronary interventions.&rdquo;</p>]]></content:encoded><link>https://health.ucdavis.edu/research/news/headlines/uc-davis-health-among-first-in-the-nation-to-offer-new-clinical-trial-for-high-risk-heart-patients/2026/06</link></item>

         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>UC Davis Health has received a prestigious seven-year, $40 million award from the National Institutes of Health (<a href="https://www.nih.gov/">NIH</a>) to continue and expand its<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/ctsc/">Clinical and Translational Science Center</a><span>&nbsp;</span>(CTSC), a critical bridge between research and patient care.<figure class="img-left">

<p>The funding comes from the NIH&rsquo;s Clinical and Translational Science Awards (<a href="https://ncats.nih.gov/research/research-activities/ctsa">CTSA</a>) program. The initiative speeds up the process of turning basic scientific discoveries into tangible clinical treatments, diagnostics and preventive interventions that improve public health.</p>
<p>UC Davis Health is one of more than 60 leading medical institutions across the nation to receive a CTSA award, and has received continuous funding since 2006, when it was one of the 12 original program hubs.</p>
<p>&ldquo;This award recognizes nearly two decades of building a system that moves promising ideas out of the lab and into clinical care,&rdquo; said<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/leadership/bios/wun">Ted Wun</a>, the director and contact principal investigator (PI) of the award. Wun is also the chief of hematology and oncology at UC Davis Health and serves as a co-principal investigator of the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/cancer/population-health/population-health-calcares-program">California Cancer Reporting and Epidemiologic Surveillance</a><span>&nbsp;</span>program.</p>
<p>&nbsp;&ldquo;Our goal is simple but not easy: Train and help researchers, clinicians and communities work together to develop and deliver better treatments faster,&rdquo; Wun added.</p>
<p>With the renewal, UC Davis will expand its efforts in several key areas, including:</p>

<p>&ldquo;We both melted when we saw them,&rdquo; said Cameron&rsquo;s mom, Caroline Nguyen. &ldquo;They&rsquo;re so adorable, and the little sounds they make &mdash; I mean, she took to them right away.&rdquo;</p>
<p>These playful companions are called LOVOTS. Their name is a combination of love and robot, and it&rsquo;s a good fit for these cute, friendly robots that chirp and squeak. They&rsquo;re child-sized, just under a foot-and-a-half tall, with big round eyes, colorful plush &ldquo;skin&rdquo; and little arms that they often extend as if asking to be picked up as they wheel around.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The LOVOTS have touch sensors all over their bodies, as well as cameras,&rdquo; explained Alondra Gonzalez, a clinical research coordinator who&rsquo;s helping to study whether these robots can help ease anxiety and reduce stress for patients. &ldquo;The robots enjoy being cuddled with, being petted and have several eye movements that they&rsquo;re coded with and different sounds that they make as well. They react to the people around them.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Can social robots help ease waiting room anxiety?</h2>
<p>Children are often anxious about medical appointments. What if social robots could help ease their nerves? That&rsquo;s what researcher <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/pediatrics/team/43120/veronica-ahumada-newhart">Veronica Ahumada</a> set out to learn with the LOVOTS.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We wanted to see if having these friendly, assistive robots in the waiting room could reduce stress or anxiety children may be feeling,&rdquo; explained Ahumada, an associate professor in the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/pediatrics/">Department of Pediatrics</a> and MIND Institute faculty member.</p>
<p>The study is the first to examine these social robots in a pediatric medical setting.</p>
<p>Ahumada is also director&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/pediatrics/research/labs/TASC-lab/">UC Davis Health Technology&nbsp;and&nbsp;Social&nbsp;Connectedness&nbsp;Lab</a> and is known internationally for her work using robots to increase inclusion and human connection.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re really exploring: Can robots and technology help already challenging situations?&rdquo; Ahumada said. &ldquo;We want to move the field forward in patient-centered evaluation of healthcare technologies before they are purchased and put in place.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Roaming robots</h2>
<p>Four <a href="https://lovot.life/en/">LOVOTS</a> &mdash; Cocoa, Jellybean, Cereal and Toffee &mdash; are on loan from a Japanese company, Groove X. They have been at the MIND Institute for several months and visit the waiting area a couple of times a week.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We have the LOVOTS roaming around to see if kids are interested, and sure enough, usually a kid will run up to one of them,&rdquo; Gonzalez explained. The robots only understand Japanese, so Gonzalez teaches the kids words like &ldquo;oide,&rdquo; which means &ldquo;come here.&rdquo;</p>
<p>As part of the study, families fill out a survey about their interactions with the robots.</p>
<p>Though the AI robots do have cameras to distinguish between people and other objects, patient privacy is protected.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We do not record ever, and we still hire a human to take notes on what is happening,&rdquo; Ahumada said.</p>
<h2>Rewarding interactions</h2>
<p>Seeing patients&rsquo; reactions to the interactive technology is rewarding for the researchers. Some children hug the LOVOTS and carry them around. Others relax with them.</p>
<p>&ldquo;If you stroke their tummies, their eyes start to droop, and they start to purr and fall asleep. Kids will sit on the floor and say things like, &lsquo;It&rsquo;s OK, you can take a nap,&rsquo;&rdquo; Ahumada said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s been interesting to see children shift their focus to this little thing that needs their love and attention.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Gonzalez and the children even sing to them &mdash; often &ldquo;Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star&rdquo; &mdash; and the LOVOTS &ldquo;sing&rdquo; back.</p>

<p>Cameron especially enjoyed singing to Cereal. At her recent appointment, she was a little nervous about her upcoming blood draw. &ldquo;She was thinking about that on the drive here,&rdquo; Nguyen said. &ldquo;Once she met the robots, she completely forgot about that and was just in play mode. And I think that&rsquo;s why the blood draw went so smoothly. She was just in great spirits from playing with the LOVOTS.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The LOVOTS will be at the MIND Institute for another month or so. Then a team of research and clinical faculty and staff will analyze the results.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The heart of our research is to use technologies to increase human connectedness. Technology amplifies human experiences and we want to amplify those very good, very human things that are already in place,&rdquo; Ahumada said.</p></span>

         <title>Delivering better care for premature infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia</title>
         <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;A study has demonstrated a new computational method that could better predict which infants will develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>
         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (<a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/bronchopulmonary-dysplasia">BPD</a>) is a common and chronic respiratory condition that occurs in premature newborns with underdeveloped lungs. BPD can affect growth and/or neurodevelopment and is sometimes fatal. Early, personalized treatments could help many of these children; however, it&rsquo;s not always clear which babies are at risk for BPD.<figure class="img-left">

<p>But now, a<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41565004/">study</a><span>&nbsp;</span>published in the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.jpeds.com/">Journal of Pediatrics</a><span>&nbsp;</span>has demonstrated a new computational method that could better predict which infants will develop BPD, giving clinicians better tools to individualize care.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The ability to identify children who will develop severe BPD would help us target those kids earlier,&rdquo; said<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/pediatrics/team/73686/divya-chhabra">Divya Chhabra</a>, associate professor of<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/children/services/pediatric-pulmonology/">Pediatric Pulmonology</a><span>&nbsp;</span>at<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu">UC Davis Health</a><span>&nbsp;</span>and first author on the study. &ldquo;Eventually, we would like to incorporate this into the electronic health record to provide more immediate insights at the point of care.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Building a dynamic diagnostic model</h2>
<p>Most infants who develop BPD are born premature, making them quite fragile. In addition, a number of factors can play a role in BPD development, making it difficult for physicians to know who is most at risk.</p>
<p>While the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://neonatal.rti.org/">Neonatal Research Network</a>, a large collaboration of clinical sites, has developed an online<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://neonatal.rti.org/index.cfm">BPD calculator</a>, the study authors and others believe this tool could be improved. The calculator estimates risk by processing a variety of data about the baby, including birth weight and respiratory support. However, it does so based on static (single timepoint) data from each infant at different ages, rather than gathering continuous patient information over time.</p>
<p>Chhabra and colleagues at<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/">University of Rochester Medicine,</a><span>&nbsp;</span>where she worked before joining UC Davis Health in September 2025, built a database of sick infants to study BPD and other health issues.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We collected their vitals, birth weights, gestational ages, the medications they were given, how much oxygen they were on and other data from their charts,&rdquo; Chhabra said. &ldquo;We used that data to develop a more dynamic version of the BPD calculator. Instead of using infant data from one timepoint, we used information from a series of points.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The research team devised three computational models to predict BPD, with each more sophisticated version improving results. The third model used a machine learning technique called<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/lstm">long short-term memory</a>, which showed much stronger predictive capabilities to guide care.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The more data we added to the model, the better it got,&rdquo; Chhabra said. &ldquo;In the future, we hope these predictions are available to us when we are rounding in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). As a result, our approach to each patient&rsquo;s condition would change. Also, sharing this information is good for families. Having a baby in the NICU is scary and better data can help reduce people&rsquo;s fears.&rdquo;</p>
<p>One of the most important, and surprisingly simple, findings was that the baby&rsquo;s first temperature reading correlated closely with their risk of developing BPD. This highlighted the importance of keeping infants warm during and right after delivery.</p>
<p>&ldquo;These babies are born into a cold environment, and they don&rsquo;t have the ability to maintain their own temperatures, depending on the neonatal teams to keep them warm,&rdquo; Chhabra said.</p>
<p>The authors hope this new BPD analysis tool will eventually be added to electronic health records, which could give physicians critical advice to enhance BPD care. In addition, Chhabra is looking forward to creating a comprehensive infant database for UC Davis Health, similar to the one she helped develop at Rochester.</p>
<p>&ldquo;My goal would be to build another deidentified database at the UC Davis NICU,&rdquo; Chhabra said. &ldquo;This would provide a number of new research opportunities, since it&rsquo;s a completely different population. <h2>Collaboration key to success of research study</h2>
<p><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/cancer/">UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center</a><span>&nbsp;</span>is one of 20 academic institutions across the country helping to recruit study participants.</p>

<p>The cancer center is working in collaboration with UCSF, which is leading the ASPIRE study on the West Coast.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We are looking at whether factors such as stress, environmental factors and access to care may be impacting their chances of having cancer,&rdquo; said<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-center/team/1129/moon-chen--jr----population-health---cancer/">Moon Chen</a>, UC Davis principal investigator for ASPIRE.</p>
<p>Chen&rsquo;s team launched its local recruitment campaign to the Vietnamese and Hmong communities in February at the Lunar New Year Tết Festival at Elk Grove Park and in May at the Sacramento Iu Mien 50<sup>th</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>Anniversary celebration.&nbsp;</p>
<p>ASPIRE&rsquo;s bilingual/bicultural Vietnamese staff set up an information booth to talk about the study with festival visitors. Eligible participants were asked if they would like to enroll in the study. To take part, participants must be:</p>
<ul>
<li>Asian or Asian American</li>
<li>Age 40-75</li>
<li>Currently living in the United States or a U.S territory</li>
<li>Never diagnosed with cancer</li>
</ul>
<p>Participants in the ASPIRE study will receive $25 for completing four surveys over 12 months. ASPIRE outreach staff will approach potential participants at gathering places for Asian Americans such as coffee shops, grocery stores and independent living units in the Sacramento area. <p>Strikingly, the drop in arrests did not end when the orders expired and continued for months afterward.</p>
<p>Those are the results of a<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/pnasnexus/pgag184">new study published in PNAS Nexus</a>.</p>
<p>&ldquo;These findings suggest ERPOs may interrupt acute-risk behavior while also contributing to longer-term reductions in criminal activity,&rdquo; said&nbsp;<a href="https://profiles.ucdavis.edu/veronica.pear">Veronica Pear</a>, first author of the paper. Pear is an epidemiologist and assistant professor at the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://cvp.ucdavis.edu/">UC Davis Centers for Violence Prevention</a><span>&nbsp;</span>(CVP).</p>
<h2>ERPOs aim to reduce firearm violence in U.S.</h2>
<p>America&rsquo;s ongoing firearm violence epidemic resulted in<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://wisqars.cdc.gov/reports/?o=MORT&amp;y1=2024&amp;y2=2024&amp;t=0&amp;i=0&amp;m=20810&amp;g=00&amp;me=0&amp;s=0&amp;r=0&amp;ry=2&amp;e=0&amp;yp=65&amp;a=ALL&amp;g1=0&amp;g2=199&amp;a1=0&amp;a2=199&amp;r1=INTENT&amp;r2=NONE&amp;r3=NONE&amp;r4=NONE">43,593 deaths in 2024</a>. About<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.thetrace.org/2025/12/data-shooting-stats-gun-violence-america/">40,000 people were shot</a><span>&nbsp;</span>in 2025, excluding suicides &mdash; more than 110 people a day nationwide</p>
<p>ERPOs are designed to address gun violence by temporarily restricting firearm access for individuals deemed by a court to pose a significant danger of harming themselves or others.</p>
<p>Currently,<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://firearminjury.umich.edu/erpo-by-state/">22 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia</a><span>&nbsp;</span>have some form of ERPO law. <p><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/neurological-surgery/team/43037/sergey-stavisky-sacramento">Sergey Stavisky</a>, an assistant professor in the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/neurosurg/">Department of Neurological Surgery</a>, will join 20 other early-career scientists from around the country in the prestigious <a href="https://www.pew.org/en/projects/pew-biomedical-scholars">Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences</a>. Each will receive four years of funding to explore leading-edge research uncovering insights into human health and disease.</p>
<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m honored to have received the Pew Biomedical Scholar Award,&rdquo; Stavisky said. &ldquo;This recognizes the potential of my group&rsquo;s new line of research investigating how the human brain produces language.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Restoring communication</h2>
<p>Stavisky is a neuroscientist and neural engineer. His work involves studying how the brain encodes speech and language, with the goal of designing devices that restore communication. He is the co-director of the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/neurosurg/research/res_neuroprosthetics_lab.html">UC Davis Neuroprosthetics Lab</a>, alongside neurosurgeon <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/neurological-surgery/team/43072/david-brandman-epilepsy-functional_neurosurgery-sacramento?FreeText%3ALast+name=brandman">David Brandman</a>. The lab&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-026-04414-6">most recent research</a> focuses on the use of brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, to <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/news/headlines/first-of-its-kind-technology-helps-man-with-als-speak-in-real-time/2025/06">restore speech</a> to people who have lost the ability to speak due to neurological disease or injury.</p>
<p>BCIs give scientists a direct window into how the brain works. By studying brain activity, researchers like Stavisky can better understand how the brain processes thoughts and language. This is essential to developing new solutions, devices and therapies for conditions like language disorders.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Language is a unique human ability that is especially understudied at the resolution of individual neurons, but I hope that what we learn will provide a roadmap for building language neuroprostheses to help people with language loss due to stroke,&rdquo; Stavisky explained.</p>
<p>Stavisky earned his bachelor&rsquo;s degree in neuroscience from Brown University and his Ph.D. in neurosciences from Stanford University. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Stanford Neural Prosthetics Translational Laboratory.</p>

<p>Pew Biomedical Scholars will have opportunities to meet annually with fellow Pew-funded scientists to forge connections and cultivate community across a wide variety of disciplines. This year&rsquo;s class of early-career, junior faculty were chosen from 211 applicants nominated by leading academic institutions and researchers throughout the U.S. They join a group of more than 1,000 scientists who have received awards from Pew since 1985.</p>

         <title>Brain-computer interface enables independent, accurate communication for man living with ALS</title>

         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-026-04414-6">new study</a> demonstrates that a person with severe paralysis caused by <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/conditions/neurology/neurodegenerative-diseases#:~:text=Amyotrophic%20Lateral%20Sclerosis,move%20and%20breathe.">amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)</a> can use a brain-computer interface (BCI) at home to communicate, work and interact with the digital world &mdash; without the need for researcher support. Published today in Nature Medicine, its results mark a significant step toward delivering practical, assistive technology for people with severe speech and motor impairments.<figure class="img-left">

<p>The BCI system was developed at UC Davis, in collaboration with colleagues at Brown University and Mass General Brigham Neuroscience Institute. It is equipped with advanced decoding algorithms that translate neural signals into text (speech BCI) and enable cursor control (movement BCI). It allows for full interaction with a personal computer.</p>

<p>The brain-computer interface is designed to restore communication and computer control by decoding neural activity linked to attempted speech and movement. Although recent advances have achieved high accuracy in research settings, real-world adoption has been limited by two key challenges: independent at-home use and reliable long-term performance.</p>
<p>The new BCI system overcomes both barriers. The study shows that it can now support rich, independent digital and in-person communication in real-world settings.</p>
<p>"For years, BCIs have been proof-of-concept devices that lived in highly controlled research labs.          <title>NIH grant to fund innovative bladder repair option for children</title>

         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Can growing blood vessels within a lab-engineered graft improve bladder reconstruction for children? For more than two decades, UC Davis pediatric urologic surgeon <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/team/urology/530/eric-kurzrock---pediatric-urology-sacramento">Eric Kurzrock</a> has been developing and testing grafts to avoid the complications after standard enterocystoplasty, a surgery for bladder augmentation.<figure class="img-left">

<p>Now, a $4 million grant from the <a href="https://www.nih.gov/">National Institutes of Health (NIH)</a> will help his UC Davis research team test a bioengineered graft infused with ligands (molecules) to treat neuropathic bladders of children with spina bifida or spinal cord injuries.</p>
<p>A neuropathic, also called neurogenic, bladder is caused by dysfunctional nerve messaging between the nervous system and the bladder . The condition results in bladder control issues and kidney disease.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The bladder is so unique because it is free floating with no supporting matrix of cells around it. It has been historically challenging for regeneration and augmentation,&rdquo; Kurzrock explained. Kurzrock is the chief of&nbsp;<a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/urology/specialties/pediatric_urology/index.html">pediatric urologic</a>&nbsp;surgery and professor of urology and pediatrics at&nbsp;<a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/children/">UC Davis Children&rsquo;s Hospital</a>. He is also vice chair of the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/urology/">Department of Urologic Surgery</a>. &ldquo;Patients with spina bifida or spinal cord injury may develop a neurogenic bladder, leading to problems with urination and kidney function. They may need bladder augmentation to enlarge their bladder.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The grant will bring together clinical and bioengineering expertise to develop and test an innovative technique to create vascularized grafts.</p>
<h2>Bladder augmentation surgeries</h2>
<p>In enterocystoplasty, the surgeon uses parts of the intestine or stomach as a graft to enlarge the bladder. The surgery requires an extensive abdominal operation and can have many short- and long-term complications.</p>
<p>Kurzrock found that the ideal substitute for the traditional bladder graft is bioengineered tissue. He developed an innovative method to solve a common problem in graft implants: the challenge of tissue contraction caused by inadequate blood supply. He devised a new procedure to create graft tissues with functioning blood vessels &mdash; a necessary condition for graft survival.</p>
<p>In 2022, Kurzrock <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/term.3323">published a study</a> on vascularized grafts for bladder augmentation in mice and pigs. His study showed that bladder vessels will connect (inosculate) with graft vessels within a few days after transplantation. These connections facilitated blood flow to the entire graft.</p>
<h2>A fortified scaffold to promote new blood vessels</h2>
<p>Kurzrock is collaborating with UC Davis bioengineer <a href="https://bme.ucdavis.edu/people/aijun-wang">Aijun Wang</a>, an expert in designing and testing supportive structures called scaffolds. Wang has developed a scaffold made of engineered biomaterial modified with a ligand (special molecule known as LXW7) that specifically interacts with endothelial cells that help vascularization. The ligand, developed at UC Davis, helps the cells&rsquo; attachment, migration and survival, which promotes formation of new blood vessels and reduces graft complications.</p>
<p>&ldquo;When these molecules are added to scaffolds, they provide a gripping site for endothelial cells to bind. This allows for better interaction between the cells and their supportive structure, known as extracellular matrix,&rdquo; explained Wang, professor of surgery and biomedical engineering. He is also the vice chair for translational research, innovation and entrepreneurship in the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/surgery/">Department of Surgery</a> and the director of the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/surgery/research/index.html">Center for Bioengineering in Medicine</a> at UC Davis.</p>
<h2>How does the graft work?</h2>
<p>The engineered graft is a pig tissue, processed to remove the cells and retain the protein structure of the matrix. This acellular scaffold prevents the host&rsquo;s natural rejection and immune response to new entrants.</p>
<p>The grafts are modified with the ligand then implanted on the rectus muscle bed. This implantation ensures optimum graft maturity and healthy functional vessels prior to bladder transplantation. The new connections provide channels for the blood to flow through the graft within days after transplant and prevent contraction.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The rectus muscle bed serves as an incubator for the graft until it is vascularized and ready to be transplanted to the bladder,&rdquo; Kurzrock explained. &ldquo;In fact, we may technically grow a graft in that space multiple times over the years.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;It's a brilliant idea to integrate the body's own healing potential,&rdquo; Wang said. &ldquo;Adding newer bioengineering technologies, such as the ligand technology, will help in microvascular regeneration of the whole bladder matrix and nearby muscle cells.&rdquo;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/cancer/community/ocoe/">UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center&rsquo;s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement</a> (COE) has funded the unique year-long study as a joint venture with the First Church of God in Merced, which serves the local Hmong community.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/conditions/cancer/bladder-cancer">Bladder cancer</a> is a serious and often underdiagnosed disease that has been linked to certain chemical exposures, such as smoking, air pollutants and job-related chemicals, including pesticides. Small-scale farmers and workers may face unique risks due to frequent handling of pesticides and limited access to occupational health information. This project seeks to better understand those risks within Hmong farmers, a group who has historically been underrepresented in cancer research.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">&ldquo;Hmong are the most underserved population in Merced and their cancer burden is estimated to be six times greater than other ethnic groups,&rdquo; said First Church of God Assistant Pastor Nomtsia Xiong. &ldquo;Any opportunity to develop a strategy to lower the cancer risk in our community is a great benefit to us.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p></p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal">Community partnership drives understanding</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">&ldquo;This study is about listening as much as it is about learning,&rdquo; Ghosh said. &ldquo;We want to understand what pesticides Hmong farmworkers are using, how often they are exposed, and how concerned they are about the effects on their health &mdash; particularly bladder health.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Pesticide use is often thought to cause neurological disorders and respiratory diseases &ndash; but it also affects bladder health. Ghosh said this is not talked about very much in the Hmong communities due to societal taboos regarding potentially embarrassing symptoms. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The project builds on earlier outreach conducted in collaboration with the COE and the First Church of God. Through this community partnership, the research team distributed a short questionnaire to Hmong farmers in rural areas of the Central Valley. The survey aimed to gauge both knowledge of pesticide exposure and potential indicators of bladder cancer within the community.<o:p></o:p></p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal">Early findings highlight areas of concern<o:p></o:p></h2>

<p class="MsoNormal">While the initial response group was small, the findings highlighted important concerns. Of the eight individuals who responded, one person reported experiencing visible blood in the urine, a potential warning sign of undiagnosed bladder cancer. Other participants expressed strong interest in understanding the extent of their pesticide exposure and its possible health effects.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">&ldquo;The feedback from our first outreach highlights a meaningful opportunity for deeper engagement,&rdquo; Braun explained. &ldquo;The community members are proactive about their health; they are ready to learn more and eager to connect with the right resources.&rdquo;<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Based on these early insights, Ghosh&rsquo;s team and the First Church of God are proposing a collaborative research approach.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Hmong agricultural workers will not simply be research subjects, but active partners. The study aims to better understand community values, beliefs and priorities related to pesticide use and bladder health risks, including risk of bladder cancer, while also providing education and opportunities for dialogue.<o:p></o:p></p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal">Three-pronged approach to building the study&rsquo;s framework</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">The project has three main goals: <o:p></o:p></p>

These sessions will be followed by surveys or questionnaires designed to capture individual exposure histories and relevant health concerns. Importantly, the study also seeks to determine the feasibility of recruiting and retaining participants from the Hmong community, with the intention of developing a larger, more comprehensive study in the future.<o:p></o:p></p>

                              <span><p>The path to a world without dementia starts with a brain tissue sample. Researchers at the University of California, Davis are developing AI-driven tools to analyze vast digital archives of brain tissue scans &mdash; work that cannot be done at scale by humans alone &mdash; to better understand dementia and improve diagnosis and treatment.</p>

<p>&ldquo;We hope this research leads to new opportunities for precision medicine for dementia so that people can receive the right treatment at the right time,&rdquo; Dugger said.&nbsp;&ldquo;The goal is to make these tools freely available to researchers worldwide, ensuring no scientist is limited by computational resources or dataset constraints.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The AggieBrain initiative is made possible by a gift of $420,500 from the Susan and Charles Berghoff Foundation with major support from Darrin Mollett and UC Davis alum William &ldquo;Bill&rdquo; Ballhaus.</p>
<p>Formed in 2021, the Susan and Charles Berghoff Foundation was inspired by its co-founder, the late Sue Berghoff. She transformed her dementia diagnosis into something positive through advocacy and philanthropy.</p>

<h2>Tackling a complex challenge</h2>
<p>Dementia is a public health crisis: Over 7 million people in the U.S. are living with the affliction, and by 2050 this number is expected to rise to 15 million.&nbsp;</p>
<p>One of the current challenges in dementia research is it can only be definitively diagnosed with an autopsy after death. Brain donation is the only means to confirm and type the disease.</p>
<p>Dugger points to cancer as an analogy: Decades ago, cancer was diagnosed and treated as a single disease, but today tumors can be deeply profiled and therapies tailored to specific types of malignancies.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Similarly, dementia is a broad term for a brain disorder associated with different neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer&rsquo;s, Lewy body and vascular dementia and frontotemporal degeneration. In addition, some individuals have more than one type of dementia.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In her work leading the Neuropathology Core at the <a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/alzheimers-research/">UC Davis Alzheimer&rsquo;s Disease Research Center</a>, Dugger studies images of the human brain, analyzing an average of 44 slides per case &mdash; a labor-intensive process that involves identifying core pathological features like lesions and segmenting brain regions. However, current methods often miss microscopic details that distinguish different types of dementia.</p>
<p>For example, Lewy body disease is characterized by abnormal aggregates of alpha synuclein protein (Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites), while Alzheimer&rsquo;s disease is characterized by aggregates of amyloid-beta and tau proteins (amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles).</p>

<h2>Training reliable and accurate models&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Reviewing glass slides containing brain tissues can be both time-consuming and demanding, but machine learning can automate this process to be completed in minutes.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Chuah&rsquo;s team is developing AI infrastructure and workflows to identify hallmarks of disease on a wide scale, referencing a large digital image archive with microscopic-level pathology annotations.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;We are creating a one-stop research workflow, a centralized collection of carefully labeled brain tissue data, that serves as a trusted reference both scientists and AI users can easily access and analyze in one place,&rdquo; said Chuah.</p>
<p>To ensure the AI models are accurate and reliable, the researchers are creating shared sets of benchmark data and standardized frameworks &mdash; a litmus test &mdash; to compare models and evaluate them for large-scale performance.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Incorporating the knowledge of human experts is necessary to assess that models are interpreting and classifying data correctly. This close collaboration between Chuah&rsquo;s and Dugger&rsquo;s labs is integral, ensuring students and staff from engineering and medicine are deeply involved in AggieBrain from start to finish.</p>
<h2>Personal experience driving change&nbsp;</h2>
<p>The Susan and Charles Berghoff Foundation has also supported research initiatives and scholarships at Stanford University, San Jose State University and several community colleges.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Dementia is a growing public health crisis and we&rsquo;re simply not prepared for it,&rdquo; said Charles &ldquo;Chuck&rdquo; Berghoff, foundation chairman and devoted caregiver for his wife during her journey with dementia.</p>
<p>College of Engineering alum Ballhaus is the eldest son of Sue Berghoff and a respected aerospace engineer and technology leader. His wife, Darrin Mollett, shares a tragic family legacy: She also lost a parent, her father, to dementia.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Convening the knowledge and talent of neuropathology and AI/Machine Learning experts to tackle dementia makes good sense,&rdquo; Ballhaus said. &ldquo;Providing an accessible framework and tools for researchers to share deep knowledge and large data sets from brain banks is critical to solving the dementia challenge.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Dugger and Chuah are also inspired by personal experiences with loved ones affected by dementia.</p>
<h2>A path to accelerate and scale dementia research</h2>
<p>AggieBrain builds on Chuah and Dugger&rsquo;s ongoing collaborations that have received funding from the UC Noyce Initiative, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the National Institutes of Health.&nbsp;</p>
<p>For example, they are collaborating on the UC Davis segment of the Brain Digital Slide Archive (BDSA) &mdash; an NIH initiative involving more than 10 U.S. research institutions. Co-led by Dugger, the BDSA aims to provide infrastructure for sharing digital slide images of the human brain across participating universities to facilitate data analysis.</p>
<p>In addition to advancing dementia research, AggieBrain can unlock opportunities to train next-generation AI models to advance understanding of a range of neurodegenerative diseases &mdash; laying the groundwork for breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment.</p>
<p>&ldquo;AggieBrain's impact is poised to extend well beyond its initial scope. The computational methods at its core, including computer vision, large language vision models and pathology foundation models, translate naturally to medical image analysis challenges in radiology, neuroengineering and other disciplines,&rdquo; said Chuah.</p></span>

         <title>Air pollution may be harming your brain’s ‘encyclopedia’</title>

Semantic memory acts like the brain&rsquo;s &ldquo;encyclopedia&rdquo; for things like facts, words and long-term general knowledge.<figure class="img-left">

<p>&ldquo;Semantic memory is essential for communication, comprehension and navigating everyday life,&rdquo; said senior author<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/phs/team/42374/kathryn-conlon---environmental-and-occupational-epidemiology-davis/">Kathryn Conlon</a>, an associate professor in the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/phs/">UC Davis Department of Public Health Sciences</a>. &ldquo;Our findings suggest that long-term exposure to air pollution doesn&rsquo;t just affect physical health &mdash; it may also shape how the brain ages, particularly in ways that matter for independence and quality of life.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Two other measures of cognitive function &mdash; executive function and verbal episodic memory &mdash; did not show an impact related to the pollution.</p>
<p>The findings were<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/bsa3.70074">published in Alzheimer&rsquo;s &amp; Dementia: Behavior &amp; Socioeconomics of Aging</a>.</p>
<h2>Reducing air pollution may reduce dementia burden</h2>
<p>The data for the research comes from the Kaiser Permanente<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://divisionofresearch.kaiserpermanente.org/dementia-healthy-brain-aging-in-black-americans/">Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans</a><span>&nbsp;</span>(STAR). Launched in 2017, the ongoing study aims to identify factors that impact healthy brain aging among Black adults.</p>
<p>Black adults in the United States experience 1.5 to 2 times higher rates of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias compared with non-Hispanic White adults.</p>
<p>In the new study, the researchers focused on particulate matter (PM), a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. Particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (about 1/30th of a human hair) are referred to as PM2.5<sub>,<span>&nbsp;</span></sub>or fine particulates.</p>
<p>Previous research has linked PM2.5 to<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2772487523000508">cardiovascular disease</a><span>&nbsp;</span>and<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(24)00003-2/fulltext">mortality</a>; however, a growing area of study is focused on the role of fine particulate exposure in the progression of Alzheimer's disease.</p>]]></content:encoded><link>https://health.ucdavis.edu/research/news/headlines/air-pollution-may-be-harming-your-brains-encyclopedia/2026/06</link></item>

         <title>Survey shows little shift in Americans’ views on political violence</title>

         <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A large, nationally representative survey of U.S. adults finds that support for, and willingness to engage in, political violence remained largely stable from mid‑2024 to mid‑2025, despite a highly contentious national election and ongoing political polarization, according to a<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/s40621-026-00684-3">new study published in Injury Epidemiology</a>.<figure class="img-left">

<p>The research, led by the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://cvp.ucdavis.edu/">UC Davis Centers for Violence Prevention</a><span>&nbsp;</span>(CVP), polled more than 8,000 adults nationwide. The survey measured beliefs about democracy, civil conflict and the use of force to advance political objectives.</p>
<p>While the researchers identified small increases in the proportion of respondents who view political violence as justified under at least some circumstances, they found no increase overall in personal willingness to commit political violence or to use firearms in such situations.</p>
<p>&ldquo;What stands out is not a dramatic escalation, but a pattern of relative stability,&rdquo; said<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/medical-center/team/241/garen-wintemute---emergency-medicine-sacramento/">Garen Wintemute</a>, first author of the study. Wintemute is an attending physician in the<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://health.ucdavis.edu/emergency/">UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine</a><span>&nbsp;</span>and director of CVP. &ldquo;Across the political spectrum, the large majority of Americans continue to reject political violence, even during a period of intense political strain.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Wintemute&rsquo;s distinguished research has shown violence is not only a public safety issue &mdash; it&rsquo;s also a health problem. He launched the annual, nationally representative survey of adults in the United States in 2022 to track year-over-year changes in attitudes toward political violence.</p>
<h2>Key findings from new study (mid‑2024 to mid‑2025)</h2>
<ul>
<li>Justification for political violence: The overall share of respondents who said violence is &ldquo;usually or always&rdquo; justified to advance at least one of 20 political objectives increased modestly, from 32.3% to 35.6%.</li>
<li>Willingness to personally engage in political violence: Measures of personal willingness to damage property, threaten others, injure someone, or kill someone did not increase overall, and willingness to kill someone declined slightly.</li>
<li>Firearms and political violence: There was no increase in expectations of being armed, threatening someone with a firearm, or shooting someone in a situation respondents believed justified violence.</li>
<li>Expectations of civil war: A small increase was observed in the belief that the U.S. may experience civil war in the coming years, while support for civil war as &ldquo;necessary&rdquo; remained unchanged.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Findings across political groups</h2>
<p>The researchers examined responses by political party and by affiliation with the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.</p>
<p>Some of the key results from 2024 that persisted in 2025:</p>
<ul>
<li>A higher percentage of MAGA Republicans (52.2%) than of strong Democrats (32.1%) believed political violence is usually or always justified to achieve at least one political objective.</li>
<li>The two groups did not differ significantly regarding their stated willingness to personally injure or kill someone, and such willingness remained uncommon across all groups.</li>
</ul>
<p>From 2024 to 2025, some attitudes moved in opposite directions:</p>
<ul>
<li>Strong Democrats showed small increases in some measures of perceived justification for violence.</li>
<li>MAGA Republicans, on average, showed small decreases on several of those same measures.</li>

<h2>Public opinion does not suggest slide toward widespread violence</h2>
<p>The findings arrive as concerns persist about political unrest, election‑related violence and threats against public officials.</p>
<p>The study&rsquo;s authors emphasize that public opinion does not currently suggest an inevitable slide toward widespread political violence, and that prevention efforts can benefit from recognizing both areas of concern and resilience.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Even in a period of high political tension, most Americans continue to reject political violence,&rdquo; said<span>&nbsp;</span><a href="https://profiles.ucdavis.edu/veronica.pear">Veronica Pear</a>, senior author of the paper. Pear is an epidemiologist and assistant professor at CVP. &ldquo;This suggests prevention remains both necessary and possible, particularly when efforts build on the fact that support for violence is not the norm.&rdquo;</p>

                              <span><p>Children&rsquo;s Miracle Network (CMN) at UC Davis has awarded nine grants, totaling $492,007, to clinicians and researchers at UC Davis Children&rsquo;s Hospital.&nbsp;</p>

<p><a href="https://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/children/cmn/grants.html">Grants</a>&nbsp;in the amount of $392,007 will enhance the clinical care of children, while $100,000 will support research directly improving the health and welfare of children.</p>
<p>CMN accepts clinical and research grant applications each fiscal year. Applications must demonstrate how the project or research contributes to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/strategicplan/index.html">UC Davis Health strategic goals</a>&nbsp;and/or UC Davis Medical Center institutional goals. The amount of funding is determined by the CMN executive committee and chief executive officer of UC Davis Medical Center.</p>
