POLICY

  1. The goal of the Clinical Refresher program is to strengthen the clinical skills of students who have been away from clinical experiences for a substantial period to facilitate entry and progression through the clinical years of the curriculum.
  2. The following groups of students qualify for this optional program:
    1. MD-PhD students who are returning to the clerkship phase curriculum after taking time off between the pre-clerkship and clerkship phases.
    2. Students who deferred a year (or more) for any reason and are returning to the clerkship phase curriculum.

PROCEDURE

  1. Students who qualify for the Clinical Refresher will be contacted by the Clerkship Curriculum Manager in winter quarter to see if they wish to participate in the Clinical Refresher program.
  2. Students who wish to participate will meet with a Clinical Guidance Lead (CGL) or a designated member of the clinical skills team ideally at least 1 month before the start of the experience to review goals and expectations, and create a plan for a 2-week experience.
  3. The CGL will help identify one or more clinical educators to work with the student during the experience.
  4. Students must be enrolled so they have liability coverage to participate in the Clinical Refresher program. Directed Studies enrollment will be provided to students if needed.
  5. Students must meet with the Clerkship Curriculum Manager before the first day of the experience to complete on-boarding requirements (obtaining badges, pagers, etc.).
  6. Grading
    1. A formative evaluation of the student will be completed by their clinical preceptor.
    2. The evaluation will be based on graduation competency milestones pertaining to entry into the curriculum's clerkship phase.
    3. The CGL will share areas of improvement with the student and the student's academic coach. Together, they may create an individual learning plan to help the student succeed in the clerkship phase.
    4. Final grade: Pass/Fail; based on attendance and engagement will be assigned by the CGL.
