MMI 130: Medical Mycology (2) - Winter

Prerequisite: A course in pathogenic microbiology and consent of instructor. Various aspects of pathogenic fungi, particularly affecting humans, will be discussed including epidemiology, pathogenesis and pathology, diagnosis and therapy. Offered in alternate years. (Same course as 430).

MMI 188A: Human Immunology (3) - Spring

This course helps students understand the human immune system, the nomenclature and functional significance of the tissues, cells, proteins, and genes, as well as the normal regulatory mechanisms and pathologic outcomes related to the immune response.
MMI 188B: Human Immunology with Discussion (4) - Fall

This course includes a detailed description of the human immune system and the mechanisms of immunity. We first go into some detail describing the basic components and functions of the different cells and tissues that comprise the human immune system and later review how to apply these concepts to disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. At the beginning of the course, there is some emphasis on the molecular basis of the immune response and the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms that are involved in the normal functioning of the immune system. We then start describing the interactions between cells of the immune system that are associated with producing different kinds of immune responses and the regulatory molecules that are involved in each case and their influence in the eventual outcome. There are also discussions of clinical cases related to how human immunology is applied to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases including cancer, infectious diseases, allergy, transplant rejection and autoimmune diseases.

MMI 200D: Mechanisms for Microbial Interactions with Hosts (3) - Winter

Prerequisite: Microbiology 200A or consent of instructor. Study of mechanisms involved in microbial interactions within a host environment. The following principles are basic to understanding these interactions: host recognition, invasion, competition and growth, and host defense.
MMI 210A: Critical Analysis of Contemporary Research on Animal Models of Human Infectious Disease
Participatory Seminar—1 hour.
Prerequisite: Students funded by the Animal Models of Infectious Diseases Training Grant; others by consent of instructors. Topics/articles will include a broad range of frontiers in animal models of human infectious diseases. Research articles in current literature will serve to guide in depth student-led discussions of experimental approaches, technical aspects of experimental techniques, data interpretation, and other relevant aspects of each topic. An in-depth discussion of selected research articles in the current literature will illustrate state-of-the-art use of these animal models. Limited enrollment. May be repeated for credit. MMI 210B: Contemporary Animal Models of Human Infectious Diseases

Topics will include diverse vertebrate and invertebrate models of human infectious diseases. Presentations by faculty and students will highlight advantages and limitations of each model. MMI 280: The endogenous microbiota in health and disease (3) - Spring (odd years/alternate)

Prerequisite: Graduate standing. This course will present recent insights into the microbial communities inhabiting mucosal surfaces, and will discuss how the composition of these communities contributes to normal development, metabolism, lifespan, education of the immune system, and disease susceptibility. Course is offered in alternate years in Spring quarter (even).
