Philosophy of Care

As a physician, I am privileged to build meaningful relationships with my patients, and I approach each relationship with the utmost responsibility. I strive to listen carefully and understand each patient’s perspective. My background as a painter taught me the importance of patience and craftsmanship — qualities that continue to shape my approach to surgery. Together with my patients, I develop treatment plans that align with their goals and values. We first explore nonsurgical options to potentially avoid surgery, just as I would want for a member of my own family. Above all, I want my patients to know they can rely on me when they need my support.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Deng is a neurosurgeon with fellowship training in spinal oncology and complex spine surgery, including deformity and scoliosis. He also treats patients with degenerative spine conditions. Drawing on his experience at UPMC, he is establishing a multidisciplinary spine oncology program at UC Davis to provide comprehensive care for patients with spinal tumors. This effort brings together specialists in orthopedic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, radiation oncology, medical oncology, pain management, and other disciplines to provide patient-centered care. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Deng incorporates advanced surgical techniques including minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery.

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Deng’s research focuses on improving patient outcomes through multidisciplinary collaboration, surgical innovation, and translational research. His work has included developing biomarkers and novel therapeutic strategies for brain and spinal cord injury. Building on this experience, he is establishing a spinal tumor biobank at UC Davis to support research aimed at improving the diagnosis and monitoring of spinal tumors. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters and has presented his work at national and international scientific conferences.
