Sports Performance and Wellness Internship

The UC Davis Sports Performance and Wellness program is housed within UC Davis Sports Medicine, in an approximately 10,000-square-foot facility in midtown Sacramento, California. The clinic has been in operation since 2001 and incorporates a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach in helping individuals and groups achieve their optimal health and athletic performance.

At UC Davis Sports Medicine, our staff includes nationally renowned orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, exercise physiologists, biomechanists and sports dieticians, experienced in injury treatment and prevention, sports performance improvement and training program development. We offer a variety of services to athletes of all abilities, provide training to a wide array of students, from undergraduates to medical residents, and participate in cutting edge, applied research in the field of Sports Medicine.

The Sports Performance and Wellness program offers a variety of assessments to help people more effectively measure and optimize different aspects of their health and fitness. Our clientele ranges from sedentary individuals interested in starting an exercise program to elite professional athletes, from injured athletes to first responders.

  • Lactate Threshold
  • Bicycle Fitting
  • Running Gait Analysis
  • 12-lead Resting and Exercise Electrocardiogram
  • Pulmonary Function Test
  • Movement Screening

Internship Duties

The internship is designed to immerse to student in every aspect of the Sports Performance and Wellness program. This is not a “prep the patient and then clean up” internships.  You will gain experience in all aspects of the process. 

  • Designing testing protocols
  • Performing assessments
  • Interpreting test data
  • Applying results
  • Process refinement and improvement

Deliverables

Generate one social media post per week on a subject related to what we do in the lab.  This will help both you and our followers continue to (keep abreast of new developments in) learn more about the ever-expanding fields of sports performance and health and wellness.

Performing a “deeper dive” in to one area of what we do, geared towards client education and/or process improvement and further supporting our top-notch services

How to apply for the intern program

We are looking for enthusiastic, eager-to-learn students willing to take initiative and become immersed in all aspects of the program. The program is open primarily to undergraduate and graduate students in exercise physiology, biomechanics, or related fields. Non- students are welcome to apply, although preference will be given to current students.

Requirements

  • Minimum two quarter (six month) commitment
  • Minimum of 3.5 hours per week (typically a single shift, 8:30am – 12pm or 1:30pm to 5pm)
  • Submit resume and cover letter
  • Orientation by UC Davis Health System's Volunteer Services Program
  • Current CPR certification (preferably for health care providers)
  • Current TB test (within last year)
  • Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series

Benefits

At this time, there is no stipend offered. However, academic credit and transcript notation can be arranged through the UC Davis Internship and Career Center. We look forward to seeing you in our lab.
