For the most accurate results, please follow the instructions below.

  • No food, caloric drinks, or caffeine for at least 6 hours prior to testing.  Water is allowed.
  • Avoid prolonged fasting (>14 hours) if unaccustomed as it can increase stress and metabolic rate.
  • Morning appointments are recommended.  Afternoon testing may result in an elevated (~100 Cal/day) resting metabolic measurement.
  • NO EXERCISE the morning of the assessment.
  • Do not engage in any physically and/or mentally stressful activity the day before the assessment, including rigorous exercise.
  • Stay well-hydrated and well-rested the day of and the day prior to the assessment.
  • Wear comfortable clothing. Consider bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt.

To ensure best results during the test, here are some tips.

  • Sit or recline comfortably, remain still, and relax.
  • Avoid talking, laughing, or moving.
  • Breathe quietly and naturally, like you would when resting on the couch.
  • Do not take exaggerated deep breaths or hold your breath.
  • If you need to cough, swallow, or yawn, that’s fine — simply return to normal breathing afterward.
  • Close your eyes or focus on relaxing thoughts to help stay calm.
