To ensure the most accurate results during your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) assessment at UC Davis Sports Medicine, please follow these guidelines carefully.
Before Your Appointment
- No food, caloric beverages, or caffeine for at least 6 hours prior to testing. Water is allowed.
- Avoid prolonged fasting (more than 16 hours) unless you are accustomed to it, as this can increase stress and elevate your metabolic rate.
- Schedule a morning appointment when possible. Afternoon tests may show slightly higher values (approximately +100 calories/day).
- No exercise the morning of your appointment.
- Avoid intense physical or mental stress the day before testing, including heavy training sessions or strenuous activities.
- Stay well-hydrated and well-rested the day before and the day of your assessment.
- Wear comfortable clothing, and consider bringing a light jacket or sweatshirt for comfort during testing.
During the Test
To achieve the most reliable metabolic reading:
- Sit or recline comfortably and remain as still as possible.
- Relax and breathe normally—avoid talking, laughing, or unnecessary movement.
- Breathe quietly and naturally, as you would while resting on the couch.
- Do not take exaggerated deep breaths or hold your breath.
- If you need to cough, swallow, or yawn, simply return to your normal breathing afterward.
- Close your eyes or focus on calm, relaxing thoughts to help your body stay at rest.
Reminder
The key to an accurate Resting Metabolic Rate measurement is relaxation. The calmer and more comfortable you are, the more precise your results will be.
