Regional Pathways to Health Careers Conference: May 20, 2017
About the Conference
Community colleges are important pathways for students who are Underrepresented in Medicine. As defined by the Association of American Colleges, Underrepresented in Medicine includes individuals from racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population. African Americans, Hispanics, women, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and LGBTQ+ populations are generally considered underrepresented in medicine. To better support community college students' interest in health careers, our Center partnered with Sacramento City College to host an all-day health careers conference at Sacramento City College.
Goals and Objectives
The primary goal of the conference was to facilitate health careers mentoring for high school, college students, and parents. Objectives included:
- Increase awareness of UC Davis and other northern California based health career enrichment programs (e.g. summer enrichment programs) targeting pre-health students and particularly underserved pre-health students
- Increase confidence in understanding the variety of paths to health careers and how to secure health careers volunteer opportunities;

- Increase collaborations among high schools, community colleges, universities, health professions/graduate/medical education programs and community health centers/clinics in Northern California.
