Education programs
The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is committed to the educational missions and goals of the University of California, Davis. Our training program has been accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since it was established by Dr. Hamilton S. Davis and has trained over 200 anesthesiology consultants. Alumni practice throughout the United States, providing safe and effective anesthetics to patients scheduled to undergo a wide range of surgical procedures. Additionally, alumni have been accepted into competitive fellowship training programs at prestigious US training universities, including Boston Children's Hospital, Emory University, and Denver Children's Hospital.
The department offers a three year residency training program , which is fully accredited by the ACGME. Residents enter the program after the successful completion of an accredited Clinical Base year.
We also currently offer advanced subspecialty fellowship training in pain management, pediatric anesthesiology, and cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesiology. The pain management and pediatric anesthesiology fellowships are fully accredited by the ACGME. There is currently no ACGME accreditation for cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesiology fellowships. Fellows receive training in the appropriate discipline, working closely with the respective subspecialty faculty.
Qualified medical students have the opportunity to complete a four week clerkship (ANES 462). The majority of the time is spent in the operating room, learning and applying the basic tenets of anesthesiology. Medical students with closely with their faculty mentor, gaining invaluable practical hands on experience as well as an understanding of the medical principles used to develop and administer an anesthetic care plan.
