The five-year grant adds four positions each year, significantly enhancing the team’s capacity to train physicians who will serve in medically underserved and rural communities.

The program’s goals include:

  • Expanding the number of fellows trained in addiction medicine to meet the needs of rural and underserved populations.
  • Building partnerships with community-based clinical rotation sites that integrate primary care, mental health and substance use disorder services.
  • Equipping fellows to navigate legal and social systems that impact patient care.
  • Reducing stigma and raising awareness of addiction medicine through expanded clinical training opportunities and resident education.

This award reflects both national recognition of UC Davis Health’s leadership in addiction medicine and the health system’s deep commitment to preparing the next generation of physicians to address the nation’s substance use crisis in the communities that need it most.
