UC Davis urologic surgery chair earns prestigious award in Europe

Christopher Evans granted honorary membership in the European Association of Urology

Professor and Chair of the Department of Urologic Surgery Christopher Evans has received honorary membership in the European Association of Urology (EAU), which fosters the highest standards of urological care throughout Europe.

Evans is only the ninth American to receive this award and it reflects his contributions to the development of urology in Europe. These include training several European clinical and research fellows as well as lecturing and performing demonstration surgeries at European universities.

In the last five years, he has performed demonstration surgeries at the University of Hamburg and University Hospital Tübingen, both in Germany. He has also performed similar demonstration surgeries at San Raffaele University in Milan, Italy and Fundacio Puivgert Hospital in Barcelona, Spain.

“I have made many friends and developed many collaborations across Europe over the past 25 years and I’m very appreciative of this kind of recognition and all of the positive interactions,” Evans said.

The opening ceremony for the 38th Annual EAU Congress in Milan this month provided an opportunity for the European Association of Urology to pay tribute to this year’s distinguished award winners. At this year’s meeting, Evans also taught a course on prostate cancer for the European School of Urology, along with delivering multiple lectures.

This year, the EAU celebrates its 50th year anniversary. It represents the leading authority within Europe on urological practice, research, and education. Over 18,000 medical professionals have joined its ranks and contributed to the mission to raise the level of urological care throughout Europe and beyond.

While president of the U.S. Society of Urologic Oncology from 2017-2019, Evans developed a scholar exchange program between the two societies and he also co-edited two textbooks now used in European medical schools.
