Counseling for victims of crime

The CAARE Center provides mental health services for children who have experienced a crime, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, exposure to community violence, parental substance abuse, and neglect. Services focus on reducing the emotional and behavioral symptoms that can occur following a traumatic event. The CAARE Center offers free (grant funded) counseling services to eligible clients and their non-offending caregivers.

These services may include:

  •  Short-term crisis intervention
  • Individual counseling for children and adolescents
  • Community referrals and collaboration with community organizations
  • Parent education and support
  • School advocacy
  • Assistance in establishing a funding source to transition into long-term counseling services, if indicated
  • Services for individuals with disabilities and interpreting services

For children with a history of abuse and who exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Irritability
  • Depression/sadness
  • Poor self-image
  • Toileting accidents (e.g. nighttime, wetting, daytime soiling)
  • Anxiety/fears
  • Sexualized behaviors
  • Outbursts of anger/aggression
  • Difficulties in school
  • Problems with siblings
  • Suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors
  • Passive or withdrawn
  • Fire setting
  • Drug or alcohol use

Child Sexual Abuse Treatment (CSAT) program

The Child Sexual Abuse Treatment (CSAT) program provides Trauma-Focused Cognitive behavioral Therapy to children who have been sexually abused at the time of they are identified by law enforcement agencies and Child Protective Services. Non-offending parents and caregivers will receive support services designed to help them to respond to their children in a manner that will support their recovery and long-term emotional well being.
