My ultimate goal is to understand how and when hypertension should be treated to improve renal health of children at risk for significant renal and cardiovascular morbidity.
My current research is focused on the role of hypertension in the development and progression of kidney disease in children with diabetes mellitus. Since diabetes and hypertension are the most common causes of cardiovascular and kidney disease among adults, hypertensive children with diabetes mellitus represents a vulnerable population at risk to develop substantial morbidity and mortality.
I am currently building a study cohort evaluating how often hypertension is missed in children with diabetes, what the prevalence of white coat hypertension is in children with diabetes, and what the cardiovascular consequences are of missed hypertension in children with diabetes. By concentrating on high risk children, I hope to identify the optimal management strategy for hypertension in children.
