Health Insurance Requirement Policy
PURPOSE
To outline the School’s policy on the requirement for students to have health insurance.

POLICY
- The University of California requires that all students have health insurance.
- Insurance must be valid within 50 miles of Sacramento, California.
- Prior to the 2022-23 academic year, the School did not participate in the UC Student Health Insurance Programs (SHIP). Students matriculating in the 2022-23 academic year, and those thereafter, are eligible to enroll in UC SHIP.
- Students must either enroll in the School-sponsored insurance plan or provide evidence of outside insurance (Medi-Cal, dependent on parent insurance plan, etc.) to UC SHIP (see References).
PROCEDURE
- Students have two options:
- Enroll in the School-sponsored insurance plan, or
- Waive out of the School of Medicine-sponsored insurance plan by completing a waiver form and providing evidence of insurance coverage.
- Health insurance enrollment and waivers are maintained by the Registrar’s Office.
