The Practice Experience Program offers a remote 3-month externship (October 12, 2026 - January 22, 2027) to graduate or professional students in Health Informatics, Health Administration, Computer Science, Data Science, Public Health Sciences, or a related field. The Practice Experience Program Extern will have a unique opportunity to gain experience in Epic Electronic Health Record as well as network with professionals within UC Davis Health Clinical Informatics and Information Technology Epic Applications.

The Practice Experience Program Extern supports the UC Davis Health System Clinical Informatics Manager, Practice Experience Program and System Clinical Care Services Division. Through direct project ownership and close collaboration with Clinical Informatics leaders, Trainers, Builders, and clinicians, the Extern will gain hands-on experience in technical project management while also gaining exposure to Epic training and Epic build.
Technical Project Management & Program Operations

Lead and independently manage assigned technical and operational projects from initiation through completion, including scope definition, timeline development, stakeholder coordination and deliverables tracking
- Provide analytical and administrative support across Clinical Informatics and Practice Experience Program initiatives, partnering with management and executive leaders
- Support the scheduling, coordination, and execution of ambulatory and inpatient engagements, meetings, and training sessions
- Develop and contribute to project documentation, presentations, reports, and internal and external communications
- Support special projects such as data analysis, metrics development, and performance reporting to inform program strategy and outcomes
Epic Training & Build Exposure
- Collaborate with Epic Training Analysts, Epic Build Analysts, and clinicians to support the design, development, and delivery of Epic training initiatives and build engagement activities
- Shadow Epic Build Analysts to gather, analyze, and synthesize clinical and system-use data that inform build engagement deliverables and optimization recommendations
- Support training development efforts, including session planning, material preparation, and clinician education focused on enhancing Epic workflow efficiency and adoption
The extern must be highly organized, able to deal with ambiguity and time pressures, and be proficient in writing, analysis, and use of all Microsoft Office tools. The extern must also be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision. A high degree of collaboration and professionalism, service orientation and follow through are necessary. The extern is part of the Practice Experience Program and reports to the Practice Experience Program Senior Project Managers.
- Current graduate or professional student studying Health Informatics, Public Health Sciences, Health Administration, Computer Science or related field
- Graduate GPA of a 3.5 or higher
- Ability to hold a 19 hours/week position for 3-months remotely on Pacific Standard Time
- Detail oriented, with proven ability to effectively manage time, see projects through to completion, organize competing priorities, and effectively address complex, urgent issues as they arise.
- Knowledge of relevant clinical informatics software and technology, and the complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, and industry standards and practices involved with patient care and electronic medical data management in the UC health care system.
- Excellent customer service skills working with all levels of customers; excellent verbal and written communication skills in an informative and diplomatic manner.
- Analytical experience to research and collate data and knowledge in documentation to create reports/presentations and present to Senior Management and other staff.
- Ability to independently coordinate/perform a variety of tasks and functions, to work around an ever-changing environment of frequent interruptions and priorities, to organize workload and set priorities to work under pressure and strict deadlines, realigning priorities as necessary.
- Ability to use word processor with speed and accuracy; to read, effectively compose, and edit documents with an excellent working knowledge of English grammar, hospital-related terminology (including medical terminology), punctuation, spelling, proofreading skills, familiarity with office procedures, style and format; must pay strict attention to detail; obtain and verify information used in documents; design office procedures, style and format.
