David Lubarsky recognized as ‘CEO of the Year’ by Press Ganey

David Lubarsky, CEO of UC Davis Health and vice chancellor of human health sciences, has been recognized by Press Ganey as CEO of the Year. The organization presented Lubarsky with the award at its HX23 Awards conference on Feb. 8 in Orlando, Fla.

Press Ganey is an industry leader in patient, member, employee and consumer experience across the health care ecosystem. Press Ganey’s CEO of the Year Award is given to a leader who exemplifies leadership, passion, innovation, and values at every level and in every aspect of their health care career. The organization’s news release noted that Lubarsky was honored for his overwhelming success since arriving at UC Davis in July 2018:

“He has increased revenues by more than 50% and established new initiatives to expand health care to the underserved while still maintaining financial stability. He has also led the way in technology and connectivity by creating a digital platform and virtual hospital, which has helped UC Davis adapt to industry evolution, while reinforcing empathy, inclusivity and a patient-centric ethic.”

Press Ganey described Lubarsky as “one of the leading innovators in the country in integrating his academic medical center with the rest of his community and in re-structuring his C-Suite to reflect the importance of human experience, digital health, and equity for all.”

Lubarsky oversees an integrated academic health system that serves more than 6 million people in 33 counties across 65,000 square miles in Northern California. This includes more than 17,000 employees, including over 1,000 students, 1,000 trainees, 1,300 faculty members and a large regional primary care network. UC Davis Health provides 1.5 million outpatient visits every year and has an annual budget of $4.25 billion. It includes multiple top 50-ranked entities – the UC Davis School of Medicine, the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, UC Davis Medical Center, UC Davis Children’s Hospital, and a regional primary care delivery network.

About the CEO of the Year award, Lubarsky said he was “thrilled and honored,” and truly “surprised,” while also describing Press Ganey as an “amazing organization” that shows “the way forward.” At the conference, he noted, “I’m really excited about the future of health care, because I think we’re absolutely focused on what we want to accomplish, which is to deliver equitable health outcomes for every single person for whom we’re responsible.”

In 2022, Lubarsky was also recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of health care’s “Top 100 Most Influential People. In 2021, the Sacramento Business Journal named him as a “Most Admired CEO,” and Becker’s Hospital Review honored him as one of America’s “100 Academic Medical Center CEOs to Know.”

Also from Press Ganey, UC Davis Health recently earned the 2022 Guardian of Excellence Award for Patient Experience in Home Health. The award honors organizations that sustain a top 5% standing in the country for patient experience. Awardees are chosen based on patients’ reporting of “likelihood to recommend, overall rating, or teamwork.”
