UC Davis School of Medicine Office of Research
The School of Medicine Office of Research (SOMOR) manages research awards and proposals, oversees laboratory safety and research space, provides researchers with guidance and support for grant submissions, promotes entrepreneurial initiatives, and facilitates industry alliances and program evaluation.
The Research Operations unit facilitates research grant proposals, limited submissions, award nominations, Bridge Funding assessment and research data analytics.
The Grants Facilitation unit supports School of Medicine researchers in their grant writing, manuscript editing, and professional development.
The Industry Alliances unit directs industry partner agreements, advises on business and financial matters and supports entrepreneurial translation of discoveries from insight to innovation.
The Evaluation unit collaborates with programs to design evaluation plans with clear, measurable goals and optimal use of resources.
The Safety Management program sets standards for research safety management as well as individual laboratory safety programs and activities.
Research Space Oversight
The Research Space Oversight unit supervises all School of Medicine research space assessments, allocations, and recommendations.
School of Medicine departments rank in top 20
UC Davis School of Medicine continues its leadership in medical research with 10 departments ranked in the top 20, including three in the top 10, for research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2018.

Neurologic disease research contributes to treatment for postpartum depression
Neurologic disease research at UC Davis contributes to the first treatment specifically approved for postpartum depression. Michael Rogawski conducted lab and clinical research on the neuro-steroid. This is the first drug approved by the FDA specifically for postpartum depression.
State awards $8.8 million to UC Davis for Alzheimer's disease research
Four UC Davis scientists and clinicians have received grants totaling $8.8 million from the California Department of Public Health to study the role of racial disparities, diabetes, diet and infection in Alzheimer’s disease as part of a $21 million package of 11 Alzheimer’s research grants statewide.
Med student focusing on gut biome awarded 2019 O'Connor research grant
Simran Sandhu, a medical student at UC Davis School of Medicine, has been honored with this year’s Daniel T. O’Connor, M.D., Memorial Research Grant. Sandhu earned the award for his translational research examining how different pathologies may result in gut and skin microbiome imbalance in patients.
