Philosophy of Care

I believe in providing the best possible quality of care to children in need of imaging. I try to image appropriately, employing principles of ALARA (using as little radiation as is needed) to answer clinical questions. My goal is also to make children and their family members comfortable in what can be a bewildering environment.

Medical student education and resident education are also tremendously important to me. The constant questioning and teaching that take place at an academic center often enhance clinical care. Furthermore, our ability to continue to provide high quality care ultimately depends on educating future generations of practitioners.

My commitment to education has led me to edit two major texts in pediatric radiology, one on orthopedic imaging, the other a general pediatric radiology casebook. With these texts, I hope to help educate many more people than I will ever encounter in person.

Clinical Interests

In addition to general pediatric radiology, I have a strong interest in international education outreach in radiology. For the past five years, I have helped educate radiology residents in a new residency in Haiti.

I have traveled there many times, often accompanied by UC Davis radiology residents, faculty, and alumni. I find this outreach to be tremendously rewarding and hope to inspire others to make global outreach part of their careers. I have taught in other countries as well, including Malawi and Rwanda.

Research/Academic Interests

Intussusception Reduction: I mentored a group of bioengineering undergraduate students at UCD, helping them develop a device that simulates reducing intussuceptions. Almost half of all radiology residents will not be involved with an intussusception reduction procedure during their residency. However, many will be expected to reduce intussusceptions upon graduation. We developed an educational device that enables residents to practice reducing intussusceptions on a doll—under the guidance of an instructor. The student sees actual fluoroscopic images from intussusception reductions projected on a computer screen whenever they tap a simulated fluoro switch while they pump air into the doll. I have also conducted surveys of resident and fellow exposure to intussusception reduction along with surveys of international intussusception reduction practices. 

I have also conducted research in the field of radiology dose reduction. 

In addition, I have edited two major radiology texts: Stein-Wexler R, Wootton-Gorges SL, Ozonoff MB. Pediatric Orthopedic Imaging (Springer publishers 2015) and Top 3 Differential Diagnoses in Pediatric Radiology (Thieme publishers 2019), a resident-focused pediatric radiology review book.
