Designated Emphasis in Translational Research | UC Davis CTSC

The Designated Emphasis in Translational Research (DETR) is an inter-graduate group program that allows Ph.D. students to receive and be credited for training in the area of translational research. The latter is defined as application of knowledge from any area of graduate study to enhance human and animal health and well-being. Students in any affiliated graduate group or program may participate. This can include (for example), physical and mathematical sciences, engineering, environmental and agricultural sciences, as well as the health, behavioral, and social sciences. The overarching goal of the initiative is to provide an innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable model for training a new cadre of Ph.D. scientists who will have productive careers in translational and health sciences research.

Mission

• Enable trainees to acquire knowledge and skills to help them translate discoveries from their discipline into tools for improving human and animal health and well being.
• Prepare trainees to participate in translational team research aimed at improving human and animal health and well-being.
• Provide trainees with training experiences where they can identify opportunities to apply tools from their discipline to unmet biomedical, public health, or veterinary needs.
• Prepare trainees to recognize the importance of research questions that impact health disparities
