Terri consultation

The Family Caregiving Institute was launched with caregivers in mind — a world-class group of clinicians, educators and researchers who strive to support the more than 40 million individuals who provide care to aging family members or friends in the U.S.

Are you a caregiver?

Do you help an older adult…

  • with their groceries?
  • get to their doctor appointments?
  • manage daily activities such as taking their medication or brushing their teeth?

If yes, you are a caregiver. A caregiver is a person who helps an older relative, neighbor or friend who needs assistance with daily living or care concerns because of their physical or cognitive health challenges. Caregiving comes with its own unique set of rewards and challenges.

What is a family caregiver consultation?

A one-on-one meeting with a clinician experienced in geriatric care and caregiving to discuss medical task guidance, stress relief and community resource agencies that can offer support.

The goal of the consultation is to offer the caregiver support, recommendations, and the necessary resources to help them maintain the care they provide while also focusing on their own needs and well-being.

Consultation is open to caregivers of UC Davis Health patients, even if the caregiver receives care from another provider; or UC Davis Health patients who are themselves caregivers.

What can I expect at a family caregiver consultation?

  • You will be asked to take a short assessment prior to or as part of your one-hour visit at the Healthy Aging Clinic in Midtown Sacramento.
  • The assessment will help the clinician understand your specific situation, including how well-prepared you are for more complicated medical tasks, stress management, understanding family dynamics and providing tools to support decision making.
  • You’ll discuss possible solutions and resources to support you as a caregiver and in your caregiving plan.

Can caregivers attend a family caregiver consultation online?

The appointment is most effective if you can meet in-person, one-on-one with our experts.

We understand this can be challenging if your family member needs more\ round-the-clock care. Is there a family or friend you can ask to sit with them for a couple of hours?

We also offer telehealth visits — call the clinic to discuss how we can connect.
