Clinical History
The patient is an 83-year-old male with severe thrombocytopenia secondary to chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and treated with splenectomy. The received specimen is an 823 g, 22.8 x 13.4 x 7.5 cm aggregate of brown-red soft tissue (fragmented splenectomy specimen). The larger segments are sectioned revealing congested purple-red cut surfaces. Areas of parenchymal hemorrhage are present. There is no gross expansion of the white pulp. Representative sections are submitted as follows (Fig. 1).
