The goal of the BloodSource rotation is for the Pathology resident to develop an expanded medical knowledge base in blood manufacturing, blood donor eligibility, blood component therapy, patient blood management, immunohematology and histocompatibility principles and methodologies. This will be accomplished through extensive discussions, presentations and case reviews with subject matter experts. BloodSource physicians who provide guidance and mentoring during the rotation are board certified in Clinical/Anatomic Pathology, Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking, and/or Molecular Genetic Pathology and/or ASHI- accredited as HLA Laboratory Directors. The residents also will benefit from direct interactions with experienced RNs, Clinical Laboratory Specialists (CLS) and Specialists in Blood Banking (SBB). The rotation will cover key aspects of a robust Quality System applicable to a blood center and CLIA-regulated clinical laboratory, as well as issues crucial to a comprehensive patient blood management program (the latter complemented via access during the rotation to BloodSmartTM resources).
