Rising costs, changes in population demographics, workforce shortages, and global health needs are motivating changes in health care delivery. Our department seeks to influence these changes by leading and participating in research and demonstration projects that explore new methods and approaches in health care delivery.

Our creative activities draw from departmental interests and strengths, as well as those throughout the UC Davis Health System, and include telemedicineinformatics, new technologies developed though the Center for Biophotonics, the Center for Health Care Policy and Research and the laboratory's tradition of leadership in continuous quality improvement.

Our largest program is our NIH-funded Point-of-Care (POC) Technologies Center, a joint effort between UC Davis and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Led by faculty member Gerald Kost, this center  develops novel diagnostic devices, testing methods, and interpretive tools that will help eliminate health disparities by making predictive, preemptive, preventive, and personalized care accessible to all communities. One of four in the United States, the Center focuses on critical-emergency-disaster care.

In addition, the department is partnering with industry to explore new and efficient health care applications in digital imaging, molecular testing, and other new technologies and methods.
