Dr. Hansen received his Bachelors of Science in Microbiology from Penn State University in 1986, before working in academic research at Boston University, the Boston VA and Harvard Medical School. Research programs included electron microscopic investigation of blue green algae, biochemistry of the vitamin K dependent coagulation proteins, neutrophil activation, mouse models of lupus and amyloid, creating novel ELISA assays, and using recombinant and sequencing DNA technologies to investigate transmembrane co-transport. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Boston University in 1994 and completed AP and CP residency, followed by a Hematopathology Fellowship at the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Hansen is in private practice in Monterey, California with Monterey Pathologists, Inc., providing comprehensive anatomic and clinical pathology services to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, and was Medical Director of their blood donor center from 2004 to 2014. Since 2009 he has rotated as volunteer pathologist for approximately 1 month/year, working in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda.
