The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a 60%-time Lecturer position to teach the core courses required for minor in PHS for undergraduate students (SPH 102, SPH 104, SPH 113, SPH 190). These courses span the academic year and provide rigorous training in the health sciences to prepare students to analyze the complex issues surrounding population health
The appointee will be expected to assume a central role in in the teaching of Introduction to Human Epidemiology (SPH 102), Global Health (SPH 104) , Health Disparities in the US (SPH 113), and Topics in Public Health (SPH 190), coordinated within curricula that are delivered in PHS.

This position will have a start date of March or April 2020.

Related duties include:

• Utilize a range of appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods including lectures, tutorials and practical activities to enable teaching and learning of Introduction to Human Epidemiology (SPH 102), Global Health (SPH 104), Health Disparities in the US (SPH 113), and Topics in Public Health Seminar (SPH 190).

• Utilize a range of appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods including lectures, tutorials and practical activities to enable teaching and learning of Introduction to Human Epidemiology (SPH 102), Global Health (SPH 104), Health Disparities in the US (SPH 113), and Topics in Public Health Seminar (SPH 190).
• Participate in curriculum design, review and evaluation processes.
• Participate in the supervision of undergraduate students.
• Participate in undergraduate curriculum committee.
• Coordinate with Instructors of SPH190 Topics in Public Health Seminar

General Information:

The Department of Public Health Sciences is based in the UC Davis School of Medicine. Its mission is to improve the health of people using approaches based in epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, and behavioral science through research, educational programs, clinical programs, public service, and policy development.

The Department hosts several degree programs, including the MPH, MS in Health Informatics, an undergraduate minor in Public Health Sciences, and a PhD in Public Health Sciences. This is a 12-month appointment at 60% time and will be renewed annually based on performance and available funding. More information about the department can be found here: http://phs.ucdavis.edu.
The Public Health Sciences Minor offers undergraduate students a foundation of knowledge for those who plan to enter the field of public health immediately following graduation and for those planning to earn an advanced degree in Public Health or a related field including medicine, nursing, and dentistry. It is open to students from all four colleges at UC Davis. The minor in Public Health Sciences offers the option of doing an internship for 2 - 4 elective units.

Students who complete the 20 unit minor in Public Health Sciences will demonstrate the following:

1. Knowledge of key content regarding epidemiology and biostatistics, major health conditions, disease prevention strategies, and health disparities.
2. Knowledge of key determinants of health and disease, including biological factors, individual behavior, and social, political, and cultural influences.
3. Ability to communicate orally and in writing about concepts in epidemiology and biostatistics, disease prevention, and health disparities.

Courses to be taught: 6 Instructional Workload Credits (IWC)

SPH 102. Introduction to Human Epidemiology (4 units) Lecture/Discussion-4 hours. Introduction on the fundamental principles of epidemiology, exploring patterns of disease, threats to health and epidemiological methods for prevention, control and treatment.
SPH 104. Globalization and Health: Evidence and Policies (3 units) Lecture/Discussion - 3 hours. Open to undergraduate and graduate level students. The course Globalization and Health brings all these questions together to investigate the multiple effects of globalization on health and emphasizes available evidence and policies.
SPH 113. Health Disparities in the US (3 units) Lecture/Discussion-3 hours. An introduction to the research that helps understanding health disparities and social determinants in the United States; review of culturally responsive approaches.
SPH 190. Topics in Public Health (1 unit) Seminar—1.5 hours. Seminar on key issues and current topics in public health. In addition, this position is responsible for student advising and committee service on the department Undergraduate Education Committee.
Basic Qualifications:

The criterion for appointment is evidence of teaching excellence and expertise in public health practice. Applicants must possess an MPH degree from a CEPH-accredited institution in any public health specialty (e.g., general public health, epidemiology, health services, health promotion, etc.). A minimum of five years’ experience in public health practice, such as in a local or state health department or a non-profit organization, is required. University level teaching experience is highly desired, as is familiarity with distance education technologies.
