I believe in caring for the whole person and understanding how illness and life circumstances have impacted health and the ability to do daily activities. For frailer patients, I believe in the doctor - patient - caregiver triad, meaning that the needs and abilities of the caregiver need to be taken into consideration.
Dr. Hirsch is a general internist and geriatrician primarily involved in teaching medical residents and clinical clerks. Clinically, he focuses on optimization of functional status and reduction of the number medications whenever possible within the context of acute and chronic illnesses. He has interest and expertise in the diagnosis and management of dementing illneses like Alzheimer disease.
Dr. Hirsch is the Principal Investigator of the UC Davis Field Center of the Cardiovascular Health Study, which is a 33 year old longitudinal epidemiological study of 5,888 individuals age 65 and older and study enrollment looking not only at factors associated with cardiovascular health, but also factors related to cognition and functional status. He is author or co-author of over 50 scientific articles, commentaries, and book chapters and co-editor of two medical textbooks.
