AnyConnect VPN

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client (VPN)

UC Davis Health provides remote access VPNs for employees and non-employees, who are authorized to connect to the UC Davis Health network from remote locations. Remote Access VPNs should solely be used for conducting UC Davis Health businesses.

AnyConnect VPN instructions and support

  • UC Davis Health issued computers
    Administrative rights are required to install an application or program. If you do not have the administrative rights contact your system administrator. For UC Davis Health issued computers, submit a service request to obtain the administrative right.
  • Outside the UC Davis Health network
    You can download and install the AnyConnect VPN from inside or outside the UC Davis Health network, but to connect you must be outside the UC Davis Health network or use the Guest Wireless.

Duo authentication

NOTE: Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is required to authenticate and connect to VPN sessions. Duo is a secure mobile authentication app for quick, push notification-based approval to verify your user's identity with a smartphone or other device.

Windows – AnyConnect VPN installation

  1. Download and install Windows AnyConnect VPN (above) (Active Directory/HS credentials are required outside UC Davis Health network).
  2. Open AnyConnect VPN.
  3. Enter the URL “connect.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu” and click connect.
  4. Use your HS/Citrix credentials to log into AnyConnect VPN.
  5. Approve the Duo push notification on your smartphone.
  6. Accept the banner to continue.
  7. Once you are connected, you will see the icon located in the system tray represented by the Cisco AnyConnect symbol with a gold lock.

Windows – AnyConnect VPN with Start Before Logon (SBL)

With SBL enabled, customers see the AnyConnect VPN GUI logon dialog before the Windows logon dialog box appears. This establishes the VPN connection first. SBL allows Health System Windows scripts to run; hence automatically mapping the network drives (shared drive and home drive). This feature is only available for Windows operating systems.

Manual – SBL installation

  1. Install AnyConnect VPN.
  2. Install Start Before Logon.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
  5. Windows 10 – Click on the icon (Network sign-in) on the bottom right of the screen.
  6. In "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" type connect.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/sbl and click Connect.
  7. Use your HS/Citrix credentials to log into AnyConnect.
  8. Approve the Duo push notification on your smartphone.
  9. Accept the banner to continue.
  10. Use your HS/Citrix credentials to log into Windows.

Supported Versions: macOS 12, 11.2, 10.15, and 10.14 (all 64-bit)

Quick Install Steps:

  1. Click Download – Macintosh AnyConnect VPN (above).
  2. Click Continue.
  3. Click Continue and then click on Agree to continue the installation.
  4. Uncheck everything except VPN and click continue.
  5. Start the AnyConnect VPN from Launchpad.
  6. Enter the URL “connect.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu”.
  7. Use your HS/Citrix credentials to log into AnyConnect.
  8. Approve the Duo push notification on your smartphone.
  9. Accept the banner to continue.
  10. When connected, you will see the AnyConnect icon with a gold lock in the status bar.

  1. Download "Cisco AnyConnect" client from the App Store.
  2. Open "Cisco AnyConnect".
  3. Click Add VPN Connection.
  4. Description = UC Davis Health VPN (or any other name you wish to give).
  5. Server Address = connect.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Slide Anyconnect VPN button to ON.
  8. Enter the UC Davis Health Active Directory/HS/Citrix username and password.
  9. Approve the Duo push notification on your smart phone.
  10. Accept the banner.
