This issue’s cover story features a top UC Davis cancer researcher who has been awarded a $1.9 million grant to study lethal cancers in firefighters.

The magazine also includes a story on the new Canine Tumor Genome Atlas project. Learn about how the next-generation DNA sequencing of dog tumors may help unlock cancer breakthroughs for pets as well as people.

Readers will also find out about the cancer center’s new lung cancer clinic that links education and prevention with the latest diagnostics and surgical technologies to catch and treat lung cancer, the No. 1 cause of cancer deaths.

The new Synthesis also details a novel initiative focused on addressing cancer risks in persistent poverty areas. There’s also an article on the cancer center’s commitment to understanding the cancer burden endemic in Native American communities and the tribal outreach underway to help address these disparities.

Finally, the issue spotlights high-profile donors such as the Farrah Fawcett Foundation and Hyundai Motor America, which are making a difference at the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in inland Northern California.

These stories and many more can be found in the latest issue of Synthesis. Sign up to receive a free subscription to the print version of Synthesis, which is also available online. Questions or comments? Contact Synthesis editor Stephanie Winn at stawinn@ucdavis.edu.
