patient and doctor consultation

The Department of Urologic Surgery provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for both adults and children living with urological conditions. Our specialists manage urinary incontinence through both medical and surgical therapies. A multidisciplinary team of surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation therapists collaborates in the treatment of urologic cancers.

Patients living with kidney stones receive minimally invasive stone removal procedures and medical evaluation to identify risk factors for recurrence. Male infertility is treated using advanced techniques such as testicular biopsy, vasograms, seminal vesiculograms, vasovasostomy and vasoepididymostomy.

Our department also utilizes the da Vinci robotic surgical system for the treatment of kidney and prostate cancers, as well as other kidney disorders.

Specialties include:

Focal therapy for prostate cancer

doctor with patient checking information

We are leaders in advanced treatments for prostate cancer, and the first in our region to offer focal therapy. We now offer high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and cryotherapy to ablate specific areas of the prostate for cancer treatment. Focal therapy more precisely ablates the diseased part of the prostate, with significantly lower risk of permanent side effects such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

Immunotherapy in drug-resistant prostate cancer

malignant cancer cell

Chengfei Liu, M.D., Ph.D., received a $1.4 million federal grant to test immunotherapy for drug-resistant prostate cancer. His team is studying whether combining the standard drug enzalutamide with the immunotherapy agent atezolizumab can enhance treatment by activating the body’s T-cells.

They have also developed a new compound, LX-1, which targets both androgen receptor variants and the enzyme AKR1C3 — two key drivers of resistance. This dual-action approach may offer a new option for patients with treatment-resistant tumors.
