The Department of Urologic Surgery offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for adult and pediatric urological conditions. Urinary incontinence is treated through pharmacologic and surgical means. Expert surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation therapists cooperate in the treatment of urological cancers. Patients with kidney stones are treated with minimally invasive stone removal techniques and medically evaluated to determine risk factors for recurrent stone formations. Male infertility is addressed through testicular biopsy, vasograms, seminal vesiculograms, vasovasostomy, and vaseoepididymostomy. The department offers treatment using the da Vinci robotic surgical system for cases involving kidney and prostate cancers, as well as kidney dysfunction.

We are a leader in advanced treatments for prostate cancer, and the first in our region to offer focal therapy. We now offer high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and cryotherapy to ablate specific areas of the prostate for cancer treatment. Focal therapy more precisely ablates the diseased part of the prostate, with significantly lower risk of permanent side effects such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
Assistant professor Chengfei Liu, M.D., Ph.D., was just awarded a $1.4 million federal grant to test immunotherapy in drug-resistant prostate cancer. The hope is that the standard prostate cancer drug enzalutamide may work better when combined with the immunotherapy drug atexolizumb, which fuels the body’s T cells.
Another promising treatment we have developed is a new compound that could offer alternatives for patients with treatment-resistant tumors. The molecule is called LX-1. It simultaneously targets androgen receptor (AR) variants and the enzyme AKR1C3, which are both known to drive resistance. We believe this new compound could be the answer to helping these patients.
