Hypoglycemia | Conditions We Treat | Pediatric Endocrinology Specialty | UC Davis Children's Hospital

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia means “low blood sugar.” Low blood sugar levels can be caused by many different conditions, including hormone imbalances of various types. These include conditions like hyperinsulinism (excess production of insulin), hypopituitarism (inadequate function of the pituitary gland), diseases of the adrenal gland and many other conditions. Finding the cause of hypoglycemia is complicated and involves testing hormone levels at the time that the blood sugar level is low. Once a cause is determined, treatment is geared toward correcting the endocrine conditions that are causing blood sugar levels to be low.
