Course description

ENA developed and implemented the TNCC for national and international dissemination as a means of identifying a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge. The TNCC (Provider) is a 16 or 20-hour course designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills.

TNCC course content includes the Trauma Nursing Core Course and Trauma Nursing Epidemiology, Biomechanics and Mechanisms of Injury, Initial Assessment, Airway and Ventilation, Shock, Brain and Cranial Trauma Ocular, Maxillofacial, and Neck Trauma, Thoracic Trauma, Abdominal Trauma, Spinal Cord and Vertebral Column Trauma, Musculoskeletal Trauma, Surface and Burn Trauma, Special Populations: Pregnant, Pediatric, and Older Adult Trauma Patients, Disaster Management, Psychosocial Aspects of Trauma Care, Transition of Care for the Trauma Patient and Demonstration of the Trauma Nursing Process Station. Skill Stations include: Trauma Nursing Process Teaching Stations, Airway and Ventilation Interventions Teaching Stations, Spinal Protection, Helmet Removal, and Splinting Physical Assessment Station.

Successful completion of the course includes scoring 80% or greater on the multiple-choice examination and demonstrating all critical steps and 70% of the total points in the evaluated skill stations. In order to receive TNCC certification, participants must be a registered nurse.

Course materials

The TNCC Trauma Nursing Core Course Provider Manual, 8th Edition is mandatory for entrance in the course. Participants must bring their textbook to class or they will be unable to attend.

A loaner manual, TNCC Trauma Nursing Core Course Provider Manual, 8th Edition, for UC Davis Health staff may be picked up at the CPPN office, approximately one month prior to the class with a $115 deposit. Loaner manuals must be returned in good condition within 5 days. Participants are responsible for the $115 cost of the manual if it is not returned or is damaged. Manuals are also available for purchase through Cascade Training Center.

It is highly recommended that students have (and read) their books 30 days prior to the class. 

Online modules

Cascade Training Center will e-mail the access key for the online modules at time of course registration.

Attire

Wear loose, comfortable clothing or scrubs. You will be practicing skills that require working on your hands, bending, standing, and lifting. If you have physical conditions that might prevent you from participating in the course, please notify us prior to the course. The instructor will work to accommodate your needs within the stated course completion requirements.

Registration

Class dates and registration is available through Cascade Training Center. UC Davis employees must obtain a unit-specific coupon code from their manager for registration. Any staff member who registers for TNCC and does not cancel and is a no-show, will be responsible for paying for their next class.

UC Davis employees are required to wear their employee badge in order to attend the course.
