Researchers seeking a cure for spina bifida get a step closer to their goal

Researchers on the path to finding a cure for spina bifida have identified specific elements in stem cell secretions as key to protecting neurons and ultimately reducing the lower-limb paralysis associated with the birth defect. The team will use the results to optimize the neuroprotective qualities of a stem cell treatment they developed that improves mobility in lab animals and dogs with spina bifida.

Critical care transport nurses recognized for life-saving care

At UC Davis Children’s Hospital, the Critical Care Transport (CCTT) program is a dedicated children’s transport team available to a 33-county area – and sometimes beyond – 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The team specializes in bringing an advanced level of care to infants and children at surrounding community hospitals, where appropriate resources may not be available.

Funds raised stay local, meaning all funds donated benefit the children in the 33-county service area served by the hospital.

Thirteen grants totaling nearly $400,000 have been awarded by Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) at UC Davis to clinicians and researchers at UC Davis Medical Center. For decades, clinicians have worried that giving too much intravenous fluid to children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) may contribute to brain swelling and injury, and even death. Mark and Melanie Payne’s story started like a storybook romance. They were college sweethearts. Mark was the captain of the UC Davis basketball team. Melanie was the captain of the UC Davis volleyball team. They were engaged after college graduation, married in 2012 and then moved to Europe to pursue Mark’s career as a professional basketball player.

High-efficiency filters reduce indoor air pollution but not asthma symptoms

A new study focused on households with asthmatic children finds that the use of high-efficiency filtration, either as part of a central air system or standalone air cleaner, improves indoor air quality. The study also found that while participants did not report reduced asthma symptoms, they did have fewer visits to doctor’s offices and hospitals for asthma care.

Sergio Ledesma thought it was a cold. His son Adolfo had the usual symptoms. It was going around. But when he began to turn pale and could hardly breathe, his dad took him to the emergency room at their local hospital. By this point, Adolfo’s health had declined so much he was airlifted to UC Davis Children’s Hospital. He needed to be in the Pediatric and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PICU/PCICU) and UC Davis Children’s Hospital is the Central Valley's only level I pediatric trauma center and emergency department that includes state-of-the-art neonatal, pediatric and pediatric cardiac intensive care units.
