Cancer Leadership Academy
Program Overview
The University of California Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) is proud to launch the inaugural Cancer Leadership Academy. This 18-month academy prepares new and aspiring leaders using didactic learning, mentorship, professional coaching, and demonstration of proficiency through a capstone project. Fellows will gain an understanding of recognized leadership competencies and will be able to execute them at levels appropriate to their positions. At the conclusion of the Academy, Fellows will be able to:
- Model leadership in academia
- Support and progress the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG)
- Support and progress the Plan to Enhance Diversity (PED)
- Build and sustain inter-institutional relationships and multi-expert teams
- Build on scientific and creative talent
- Manage time and achieve academic goals
- Model the inclusion and activation of community in research
- Navigate the matrixed organization
- Build and motivate diverse teams
Eligibility
- Faculty appointment at UC Davis or UC Davis Health below the Full Professor rank
- Member of the Cancer Center
- Demonstrated desire for career evolution within the UC Davis or UC Davis Health leadership structure with priority given to applicants interested in positions with UCDCCC
- Able to fully engage in the 18-month Academy, participate in leadership activities, and complete a Capstone Project Blueprint by graduation to be implemented in the year after graduation.
- Potential to use the knowledge gained from the Leadership Academy and apply it to various academic situations and positions
Leadership Academy Fellows can be faculty that currently hold leadership positions or have the potential for advancement to leadership positions such as Assistant Research Program Leader, Program Leader, Assistant Director, Associate Director, Associate Dean, Dean, Department Chair, etc.
To further their academic career development, Fellows are expected to participate in in-person and virtual sessions (max. two hours each) about various leadership topics over an eighteen-month period (March 2025-August 2026). In addition, Fellows will be required to develop a leadership-focused Capstone Project Blueprint, receiving mentorship throughout the process. They will present their completed blueprint at graduation, with guidance tailored to Academy topics and additional areas identified by cohort needs.

A support letter should be submitted from one individual who is familiar with your leadership ability or potential. Evaluators should include the following in the letter:
- How long have you known the candidate?
- How would you describe the candidate’s potential for and competencies/talents of leadership?
- Why do you believe the candidate should be a Leadership Academy Fellow?
- What do you believe is the candidate’s potential for leadership in higher administration?
- What types of positions do you envision the candidate assuming during the next five to ten years?

- February 7, 2025 – application deadline
- February 28, 2025 – Fellow announcements
- March 25, 2025 – Academy begins; Session 1
- May 20, 2025 – Session 2
- October 21, 2025 – Session 3
- November 18, 2025 – Session 4
- January 20, 2026 – Session 5
- March 24, 2026 – Session 6
- August 25, 2026 – Graduation and Capstone Presentations
