Professor, Division of Biostatistics
Biostatistician, Center for Reducing Health Disparities
Miriam Nuño, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of California, Davis. She has over 15 years of experience in transdisciplinary research, collaborating with clinicians, epidemiologists, public health officials, mathematicians, statisticians, and community partners. Her work bridges biostatistics, mathematical modeling, epidemiology, and public health to develop innovative solutions to complex health challenges, particularly those affecting underserved communities.
Dr. Nuño is an accomplished researcher with over 160 peer-reviewed publications and deep expertise in advanced statistical methodologies, including multivariable modeling, clustered longitudinal study designs, observational studies, and big data analytics. She applies rigorous statistical and mathematical methods to address health disparities and enhance patient outcomes, with a particular emphasis on mental health and infectious disease modeling and surveillance. Her ultimate goal is to transform research into meaningful change, turning data into action that improves lives, advances equity, and ensures that those most impacted are not only represented in the science but benefit directly from its outcome. She has led and co-led numerous projects serving Latino communities across California, designing culturally informed interventions to address health disparities and expand access to care. She has substantial experience developing and managing complex databases to support robust predictive models, ensuring high-quality data integration for effective public health interventions.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Nuño led multiple high-impact research and implementation initiatives that translated into actionable strategies for community protection. She served as the Biostatistics Core Director for Healthy Davis Together (HDT), a nationally recognized community demonstration project that significantly reduced COVID-19 transmission in Davis, California. In California’s Central Valley, she spearheaded data analytics and vaccine equity strategies as part of RADx-UP ÓRALE COVID-19!, and MOVE IT UP (Mobilizing Organizations Via Equitable Immunizations and Testing Unified Partnerships). Her work played a critical role in shaping evidence-based prevention and mitigation strategies in nursing homes, expanding community testing access, and addressing disparities in vaccine uptake among vulnerable and underserved populations.
Dr. Nuño is deeply committed to community-engaged research, with a focus on mental health outcomes. As Co-Investigator and Lead Biostatistician at the Center for Reducing Health Disparities (CRHD), she leads initiatives aimed at reducing mental health disparities and enhancing access to care in underserved communities. In this role, she leads biostatistical and data management efforts, ensuring rigorous compliance with data sharing policies, archiving, integration, and effective dissemination of results. Her analytical expertise is instrumental in advancing CRHD’s mission to improve health outcomes through culturally responsive, community-informed, and data-driven approaches.
Dr. Nuño brings unwavering dedication to advancing health equity, harnessing statistical innovation and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to drive meaningful and lasting change.
