Believing in better brain health for all women
Greater Sacramento Women's Brain Health (GROW) Program provides health screenings, health education and research opportunities for women living in the Sacramento region.
Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are a top medical, economic, and emotional burden for older adults and their families. Women are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. They're also typically responsible for caring for loved ones with dementia.
Women of color have an increased risk of dementia. Historically, they've been excluded from dementia care, education, and research opportunities.
“GROW aims to address brain health disparities using a community-oriented approach to research, outreach, and health education.”—Rachel Whitmer, Ph.D.

Program funding
This study is supported by the settlement of the Krueger v. Wyeth Inc. class action lawsuit, which won compensation for women who had been misled about the cancer risks of hormone replacement therapy. The lawyers decided to fund women’s health research in California with the leftover funds, and the GROW Program is a recipient of that funding.
