Leadership Message: Celebrating 35 years of the Principles of Community
Dear Colleagues,
At UC Davis and UC Davis Health, our Principles of Community serve as a foundational guide—reminding us of our shared commitment to a culture of mutual respect, collaboration, and inclusion. These principles not only shape our organizational ethos but also celebrate the incredible richness of diversity within our communities, showcasing how each unique voice and perspective contributes to a vibrant and dynamic institution. They inspire us to recognize and embrace the unique perspectives, experiences, and identities that strengthen our institution.

The UC Davis Health Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team is proud to partner with our Health community in celebrating the 35th year of the Principles of Community. Together, we work to create an environment where diversity is celebrated, equity is advanced, and inclusion is woven into the fabric of our institution. Through collaboration across Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy, education, and communication, we strive to empower every individual to thrive and to foster a true sense of belonging.
We are thrilled to invite you to this year’s series of events kicking off on Feb.10, marking the start of this year’s exciting celebration of community and culture. This reaffirmation event will feature a virtual opening (register here), followed by an exciting lineup of cultural performances at Betty Irene Moore Hall, including Tahitian and Polynesian dancers, Aztec dance, a Chinese Lion dance, and Folklórico dancer. Additionally, there will be more than 50 tabling vendors and departments participating, along with all Employee Resource Groups at UC Davis Health. These events promise an unforgettable opportunity for everyone to connect, engage, and immerse themselves in the vibrant diversity that makes our workplace truly extraordinary. We’re also excited to be collaborating with Chef Santana Diaz and the Food and Nutrition services team to offer foods from around the world – with cultural beverage stations, four food stations, and other food options.
The events offer a chance to not only witness the beauty of cultural traditions, but also to actively contribute to the ongoing work of building a more inclusive and equitable organization. By attending performances, exploring vendor tables, or engaging with ERGs, you become an integral part of building a stronger, more united community, and your involvement makes a tangible impact.
Equally vital are the structures that uplift the voices of our diverse workforce, such as Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), councils, and committees. Guided by the Principles of Community, these groups provide invaluable platforms for employees to share their stories, advocate for meaningful change, and shape our institution’s future.
Together, we aim to foster an environment where every member of our workforce feels seen, valued, and empowered to contribute. Our collective efforts are stronger because they reflect the diversity and dynamism of our community. By living the Principles of Community and uplifting the voices that inspire us, we pave the way for a bright and equitable future—one where everyone not only belongs but flourishes.
