Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romance

Spread the love at UC Davis Health. Submit your photos by Feb. 10

(SACRAMENTO)

It’s hard to miss the glaring cues of Valentine's Day. Come January, practically every grocery and retail store is bursting with aisles of pink and red-colored Hallmark cards, towers of chocolate truffle boxes, and dozens and dozens of roses.

Some people love Valentine’s Day, some dread it, and some feel indifferent about it. Wherever you fall on the spectrum—love or loathe—Public Affairs and Marketing wants to inspire something different in celebrating Valentine’s Day at UC Davis Health.

Who do you appreciate and admire?

The purpose of the holiday is to express love and admiration for those we care about.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines admiration as “a feeling of respect and approval.”

As for love, did you know the ancient Greeks had eight words corresponding to different love types? These include:

  • Eros (romantic love)
  • Philia (affectionate, friendly love)
  • Agape (selfless, universal love)
  • Storge (familial love)
  • Mania (obsessive love)
  • Ludus (playful, flirtatious love)
  • Pragma (enduring, committed love)
  • Philautia (self-love)

With that in mind, who do you want to express your love or admiration towards?

Spread the love at work

Faculty, students and staff are invited to share photos and quotes about someone you want to want to express love or admiration to. For example, it can be a colleague or mentor you respect and look up to, a romantic loved one, your furry “assistant” that keeps you company at your remote worksite, or even taking a moment to appreciate yourself for practicing self-care.

How to participate

When submitting your photo and quote, please provide the following information:

  • Your full name, work title, and department.
  • Describe in one or two sentences what the picture entails and the type of love or appreciation you want to celebrate (see love types listed above).
  • Submit your photo and quote to Carolyn Ramirez at cjramirez@ucdavis.edu by no later than Monday, Feb. 10.

Please note: If other people are included in the picture, please confirm they approve of the photo being posted on UC Davis Health’s social media channels.
