In the neurointensive care unit, Dr. Martin provides detailed, individualized care to patients. His patients, and their families, are often going through the most difficult challenge of their lives and he is there to help them through the storm. His team uses multi-modal monitoring to allow them to individualize their treatment plans for each patient. Their goal is to prevent further injury and to optimize recovery.
In his multidisciplinary TBI clinic, Dr. Martin works with therapists, social workers, and neuropsychologists to guide patients through their injury and towards community re-integration. His goal is to get patients back to as close as normal as possible prior to their TBI.
As a neurointensivist, Dr. Martin sees patients with neurological disease that requires ICU level care. This includes such diseases as traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, stroke, neuromuscular weakness, and status epilepticus.
He also leads a multi-disciplinary TBI clinic, specializing in the needs of of survivors from recent and remote injury. His clinic includes experts from neuropsychology, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, social work and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Dr. Martin's main research focus is in TBI outcomes. He is engaged in a number of observational clinical trials investigating the risk factors for post-traumatic epilepsy, particularly neuro-inflammation. Using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, Dr. Martin is characterizing how neuro-inflammation changes overtime and how this impacts recovery..
