Norika Malhado-Chang, M.D.
Professor, Department of Neurology and Instructor of Record NEU 450
Course Description:
The overarching goal of the Advanced Clinical Clerkship in Neurology is to teach the principles and skills necessary to recognize and manage the neurologic diseases a general medical practitioner is most likely to encounter in practice. Students will learn the essentials of a detailed neurological examination and the principles of differential neurological diagnosis. Students will gain clinical experience in both the inpatient and outpatient settings at UC Davis, including hospital-based services such as Vascular Neurology, General Neurology, Neurocritical care, and Pediatric Neurology; and outpatient subspecialty clinics such as Movement Disorders, Behavioral Neurology, Epilepsy, Pediatric Neurology, Neuromuscular, Headache, Neuroimmunology, Sleep Neurology, Neuro-oncology, Neuropsychology, and General Neurology.
Course Prerequisite:
This course is in the Post-Clerkship phase/4th year of the I-EXPLORE curriculum. Students must demonstrate successful completion of the Pre-Clerkship Phase curriculum. There are no Clerkship Phase pre-requisites for this course. While this is a Post-Clerkship Phase course, MS3 students are welcome to apply, as the course can be taken in either the MS3 or MS4 year.
Schedule:
4 weeks, rotating through the inpatient and outpatient Neurology services at UC Davis.
Norika Malhado-Chang, M.D.
Department of Neurology and Instructor of Record NEU 452
Course Description:
The [NEU 452] Acting Internship in Neurology builds upon the foundational learning and skills acquired in the [NEU 450] Advanced Clinical Clerkship in Neurology. NEU 452 is a post-clerkship phase course for 4th year medical students who elect to take it (it is not a graduation requirement). Students are invited from both UC Davis as well as from medical schools across the country through the VSLO system. VSLO students must also be applying to our residency program and are selected after a review of their application. UC Davis SOM students have enrollment priority and are accepted based on availability. [new paragraph] As a Sub-I, students gain more in-depth knowledge and experience in both inpatient and outpatient neurology as a “PGY-1” rather than a medical student. This requires an elevated degree of responsibility, maturity, and application of their newfound skills. Sub-I’s take a deeper dive into patient assessment, diagnosis, management, neurodiagnostic testing, and therapeutics. This course will prepare students for a potential career in neurology, but is also relevant for students pursuing adjacent fields such as primary care, psychiatry, and PM&R. Sub-I’s rotate through hospital-based services such as Vascular Neurology, General Neurology, Neurocritical care, and Pediatric Neurology; and outpatient subspecialty clinics such as Movement Disorders, Behavioral Neurology, Epilepsy, Pediatric Neurology, Neuromuscular, Headache, Neuroimmunology, Sleep Neurology, Neuro-oncology, Neuropsychology, and General Neurology. [new paragraph] Sub-I’s will have the opportunity to practice the systematic approach to the evaluation and differential diagnosis of patients presenting with common neurologic symptoms (such as altered mental status, headache, dizziness, imbalance, weakness, and numbness) as well as less-common presentations. Sub-I’s work alongside our senior neurology residents and hone their skills in recognizing, evaluating, and managing neurologic conditions that require prompt response (neurologic emergencies such as acute stroke, status epilepticus, and encephalopathy) as well as the chronic neurologic conditions they will encounter in any practice (such as Alzheimer’s disease, Essential Tremor, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy, and Headache.)
Course Prerequisites:
[NEU 450] Advanced Clinical Clerkship in Neurology (4 weeks); or a course deemed equivalent (by the IOR) at an outside institution within the U.S.
Schedule:
4 weeks, rotating through the inpatient and outpatient Neurology services at UC Davis.
Frederick Bassal, D.O.
Professor and Instructor of Record NEU 455
