When I started experiencing bruising, fatigue, loss of breath and appetite, I knew something was wrong. I made a primary care appointment at the Rancho Cordova clinic and then was scheduled for a telehealth follow-up appointment with Dr. Molly Davis. That’s when I heard the news. My lab results showed critically low numbers, and she told me I needed to go to the emergency department immediately.
I was admitted to the hospital soon after my arrival and needed blood transfusions and platelets. I received a bone marrow biopsy and was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I was shocked since this diagnosis is rare to experience as a young adult. I was started on chemotherapy and spent 41 days at UC Davis Medical Center. I had so many incredible nurses and doctors taking care of me.
My oncologist Dr. Francisco Socola has also been amazing and I’m glad we have a comprehensive cancer center, especially one that focuses on leukemia and blood cancers. All of the staff are the most caring people. They remember my name and see me as a person outside of cancer. They are now seeing my hair grow back and my energy and color coming back too.
I’m also thankful for my nurse practitioner Jennifer Rouleau who has been great in coming up with a plan for me. She listens to me and is an important part of my care team. Everyone takes the time to listen to me and help me with everything from paperwork to symptom management.
I still continue maintenance chemo including monthly infusions and daily pills, but I’m back to enjoying my hobbies again thanks to UC Davis Health.
Fun facts: I’m part of a German dance troupe; I love to read and I’m in various book clubs; I like to craft, paint and draw, especially with acrylic and watercolor.
