After my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and my sister learned she inherited a gene mutation (CDH1) from our family, it encouraged me to schedule my own genetic testing and preventative screenings. In July 2024, I learned that I also inherited the gene mutation. I met with a genetic counselor who walked me through my diagnosis. That’s when it was recommended that I undergo a double mastectomy and total gastric removal as a precaution.

I was hesitant because these were two life-changing surgeries. Instead, I opted for more surveillance and underwent an endoscopy where my doctors found early onset gastric cancer. Things moved quickly after that. I met with surgical oncologist Dr. Cameron Gaskill, and he recommended a total gastrectomy.

I had the procedure in July 2025 but experienced complications. I developed scarring and a blockage which prevented me from swallowing or eating. I was prescribed total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and underwent an additional surgery. I spent 25 days at UC Davis Medical Center.

Throughout my stay and recovery, Dr. Gaskill was extremely supportive, helpful, and accessible anytime I had questions or concerns. He’s an amazing doctor and I trust him with my care. I’m also grateful to surgeon Dr. Hira Abidi, who surgically removed a breast lesion for biopsy after radiology identified a concerning finding.

I am now cancer free, feeling like myself again, and credit my care team for helping me get there.
