Philosophy of Care

Dr. Carmichael is passionate about providing evidence based treatment to our most vulnerable and underserved populations. Each person presents with a unique history, so Dr. Carmichael tailors services to best support each client’s needs and values. He takes seriously his role in supporting clients with their presenting symptoms, and preparing them to fulfill their life goals.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Carmichael provides therapy, evaluations, consultation, and supervision for children and families who have experienced trauma or have become involved in the justice system. Over the past 20 years, he has conducted more than 700 psychological and forensic evaluations (e.g., parent-child relationship assessments, differential diagnosis, treatment/reunification planning, juvenile competency, juvenile transfer, and juvenile/adult sex offense recidivism risk). He also provides expert witness testimony and consultation regarding child sexual abuse, the effects of trauma on children, and related topics (e.g., suggestibility and memory).

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Carmichael is recognized as an expert in the field of child trauma/maltreatment, and he enjoys educating people about evidenced based treatment and assessment. He provides training, consultation, and supervision to various legal, mental health, and social service professionals. Dr. Carmichael ensures that system involved children and families (e.g., child welfare, juvenile justice) are provided with targeted, effective, and culturally responsive services. He currently supervises and trains clinical staff, doctoral interns, and post-doctoral fellows in the CAARE Center’s APA accredited training program.
