Global Mental Health ProgramHow to Apply

Residents should apply by April 1 of the year in which they wish to begin participation in the Global Mental Health track (e.g., residents who wish to start the track in their PGY2 year should apply by April or their PGY1 year). Residents who are considering applying for the GMH track are encouraged to contact Ladson Hinton, M.D., who directs the GMH Program prior to applying.

Application Requirements

The application for the GMH track should be 2-3 pages in length and including the following:

  • Describe your reason for applying for the GMH track
  • Describe any prior GMH experiences
  • List your goals for the year
  • Describe the nature of your scholarly project and any fieldwork that is planned
  • Describe plan for mentorship

Resident Project Spotlight

My passion for global mental health and cultural psychiatry is deeply rooted in personal experiences. When my family immigrated to the United States in 2010, we encountered a multitude of challenges, with linguistic and cultural barriers standing out, particularly in the context of mental health care.

Currently I am working on combining my two passions in psychiatry — global mental health and forensic psychiatry. My project revolves around putting together a scoping review that looks cross-nationally at mental health assessment of prisoners at the time of incarceration.
