Jose Joaquin Lado Abeal appointed chief of endocrinology

The UC Davis Department of Internal Medicine has announced the appointment of Jose Joaquin Lado-Abeal as chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He succeeds Sidika Karakas who recently retired.

Lado-Abeal is an internist who specializes in thyroid diseases, diabetes and neuroendocrinology. He joined the department in early April, after serving as a tenured professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Prisma Health-Midlands.

“I am excited to welcome Dr. Lado to our faculty and his leadership role as the chief for the Division of Endocrinology,” said Timothy Albertson, chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. “The enthusiasm and laser direction he has shown in his first few weeks is inspiring and he has the energy needed to help grow and expand the division.”

Previously, Lado-Abeal served as a professor of Internal Medicine and director of the Division of Endocrinology at Truman Medical Center and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. In 2019, he was named Catedrático de Medicina at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

At UC Davis Health, Lado-Abeal will oversee the day-to-day clinical operations of the endocrinology division, mentor faculty, promote research, coordinate educational programs and work collaboratively with other faculty and division chiefs.

Lado-Abeal earned his medical degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela-School of Medicine in Spain. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital Clinic I Provincial, Barcelona, Spain and Hospital Xeral de Galicia, Santiago de Compostela. He completed his residency in endocrinology and nutrition at the Hospital Xeral de Galicia, Santiago de Compostela. He did his fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Chicago Hospitals.
