Neal Kohatsu, M.D., M.P.H., FACPM is the Health Strategist in the Prevention Policy & Practice Group within the Center for Healthcare Policy & Research, University of California, Davis. Dr. Kohatsu also serves on the UCD Volunteer Clinical Faculty, Department of Family and Community Medicine. He has 34 years of experience in population health and preventive medicine, including leadership positions in government, academia, and the private sector. His primary focus areas have been: clinical preventive services; worksite health promotion; quality improvement; and patient safety. Previous positions include: Medical Director, California Department of Health Care Services; Associate Professor of Epidemiology, University of Iowa; and Acting State Health Officer, California Department of Health Services. He has authored or co-authored 40 published papers in preventive medicine and population health. Dr. Kohatsu is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and is a past president of the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM).  He received the Distinguished Service Award from ACPM. He also served on the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Kohatsu received an A.B. in Human Biology from Stanford University and an M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. His M.P.H. was completed at the University of Minnesota, with focus areas in environmental health and epidemiology. His residency in Preventive Medicine was completed at the University of Arizona in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He did a two-year, NIH-funded fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Epidemiology at the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention.
